Q: In the New Photos, why can't I split and merge events?

I performed and Update to my computer, and that has changed the entire user interface dynamic within the photos program. I want to be able to merge and split events at will like I used to, or at least have a similar process that does not require "open, copy, copy to, open again, erase" type processes. I dislike making copies when all I want to do is group photos together without having to make another folder and delete them from the previous...items get deleted with no intent on a system like this.

Events don't exist in the application, that's why you can't. Now the primary organisational tool is the Moment, and they are inflexible. Either use Albums or, frankly, if that's a deal breaker for you, another app.

It's a deal breaker; I already use albums to group photos another way for other purposes.  What other apps would you recommend, preferably something not made by Apple given my growing dissatisfaction with them.

I agree with you - I just "upgraded" to Photo and am so disappointed that I cannot use the Events like I used to: merging and splitting..

Please Apple bring back the old Events.

Personally, I use Adobe's Lightroom now. But all these apps have trials so you can explore and find the right one for you.

Albums can be used to group photos into “Events”. I agree, iPhoto Events were convenient because they were somewhat intelligently grouped when we imported. Moments are close but since we can’t fold several moments into one that’s a problem. Use feedback to let Apple know what features you want added. While Apple employees are here at ASC the ones you want to influence aren’t necessarily visiting.

You still can, it's just not intuitive.

In Photos, use the Menu to switch to "View > Albums"

In the left panel, under the heading of "Albums", click "All Photos". Now the locked-down 'Moments' view is gone.

Right Click on the heading "Albums" and select "New Folder" or "New Album". This allows you to create groups.

Drag whatever photos you want from the "All Photos" view into any new album you created.

I too am NOT happy with the new "photos'.

There are so many things missing from the old iPhoto!

I would not have upgraded if I knew I was going to lose so many features.

I want to be able to split moments as I used to in events without creating another album!

I want to be able to see file name without having to open check info everytime!

Editing is not the same - i want the blur feature back and the ability to put the black or white fog around photos.

Whose idea was the change????? NOT a good one!!!!
Bring back the old iPhoto!!!! PLEASE!!!!!!!!

Moments in Photos are the new Events, i.e. groupings of photos sorted by date taken.

When the iPhoto Library was first migrated to Photos there is a folder created in the sidebar titled iPhoto Events and all migrated iPhoto Events (which are now Moments) are represented by an album in that folder.

    PsimulatedEvents.png

To open the sidebar if it's not already open use the Option+Command+S key combination.

NOTE: It's been reported by several users that if the Event albums are moved out of the iPhoto Library folder in the sidebar they may disappear.  It's not widespread but several users have reported that issue.  Therefore, if you want to assure that you keep those Event albums don't move them outside the iPhoto Events folder.

There's a way to simulate events in Photos.

When new photos are imported into the Photos library go to the Last Import smart album, select all the photos and use the File New Album menu option or use the key combination Command+N.  Name it as desired.  It will appear just above the iPhoto Events folder where you can drag it into the iPhoto Events folder

When you click on the iPhoto Events folder you'll get a simulated iPhoto Events window.

Albums and smart albums can be sorted by Title, by Date with oldest first and by Date with newest first.

If you want to merge Album A into Album B do the following:

1 - open the sidebar with the Option+Command+S key combination.

2 - with the two albums visible in the sidebar click on A.

3 - select all of the photos in A.

4 - drag them onto the Album B icon in the sidebar to add them to B.

5 - verify all of the photos are in B.

    6 - delete A from the sidebar.

Tell Apple what missing features you'd like restored or new features added in Photos via Apple-Photos Feedback.

How gruesome. Didn't think this program could get even worse.

What if we don't want any events or albums at all? Just all of our photos imported, and dumped into one big group, then the ability to select groups of photos, using the classic selection tools (shift-click and shift+ctrl) to delete them from the phone and/or the app after moving them into my own file system and using other, better applications to otherwise manipulate them. I don't want an editor from this app. I don't want themes, or dancing elves - just an import and file management application as this was when it started life.

Can anyone suggest a better app for my purposes? Again, import/export and file management via cable. Only.

Larry tells you the apps to use to do this, but when dealing with photos it has the advantage of being very simple, but the disadvantage of being too simple. It cannot leverage any of the photo metadata - even basics like the Exif date and time of the shot. So, once you get past a couple of thousand shots you're going to spend a lot of time scrolling through folders of images, basically navigating by the icons.

Media Pro 1 will do what you want. You control the folder structure and MP1 will read the metadata, let you add keywords, create catalog sets of selected photos which are akin to albums in Photos or iPhoto.  You can download the demo version to test out.  If you still have your iPhoto library available you can migrate it to the MP1 catalog system by following this tutorial: #4 - Converting an Photo 6(06), 7(08), 8(09) or 9(11) Library to an Media Pro Catalog System

Or, at no additional cost, use what Larry suggested but with less control of your images.

Lightroom CC or local?  Does Lightroom play well with Photos?  I am probably using Photos for more than its intended(I am a pat rack and have a few dozen gigs of it).  I also back everything up to Google Photos as well.

Do the tags/gps etc. meta data translate over to Photos in Lightroom?
