Q: Aperture and El Capitan

I am running an old version of Aperture (2.4.1), do I need to update to the latest version in order for Aperture to work with El Capitan?  Will I need to manually transfer all of my photos to the new software program that comes with El Capitan "Photos" (I have thousands)?  Any suggestions for Aperture replacement?  I am semi professional and sell many of my photos.  I have a 2009 imac.

iMac, Mac OS X (10.7.5)

The only Aperture version running on El Capitan is Aperture 3.6.

It is not an update you could download. It needs to be purchased from the App Store, and Apple stopped selling Aperture from the AppStore. Aperture is no longer well supported. You can no longer print Aperture books, for example.

If you want to stick with Aperture nevertheless, You have to talk the AppStore Support to sell you a redeem code to be able to download the latest version of Aperture.

The new Photos for Mac in EL Capitan can open Aperture Libraries, see what to expect in this document:  How Photos handles content and metadata from iPhoto and Aperture - Apple Support

Photos is not really a professional tool. The features are comparable to iPhoto.

if you want a professional application to replace Aperture,  have a look at Light Room or Capture One.  There are several discussions here comparing the merits of the alternative applications.
