Q: iBooks PDF's lost after updating to iOS 9.3

After updating my iPad Air 2 to iOS 9.3, all my pdf files in iBooks went missing. Anyone have suggestions on how to get them back?

    Are there no Apple employees?

If you mean on these forums then no, these are user-to-user.

An iCloud backup doesn't contain PDFs from the iBooks app (nor does an iTunes backup) - it's only with iOS 9.3 installed that you can now choose to store them in iCloud Drive (Sync ePub, iBooks Author books, and PDF files with iBooks and iCloud - Apple Support).

If you want to leave feedback to Apple (don't expect a reply) : http://www.apple.com/feedback/

If you want to contact iTunes Support (but until iOS 9.3 PDFs in the iBooks app have been your responsibility for taking backups copies of them, they haven't been stored in the cloud or in an iTunes or iCloud backup, they are unlikely to be able to find them) : https://www.apple.com/emea/support/itunes/contact.html

THanks for your help. Did I miss something about upgrading to 9.3 needed a backup. I always assumed my backup to icloud or being on my phone was enough.

I have copies of the important ones in email.

You should always take a backup prior to updating the operating system on any device or computer. But backing up to the cloud will not have been enough, no PDFs and/or epubs in the iBooks app have ever been included in a backup (only iBookstore purchases, if they remain in the store and you don't move countries, will potentially redownload from an iCloud restore ; and similarly for your own music in the Music app, videos in the Videos app)

After 2 hours on my phone talking to the apple support, they ran out of options and told me to erase my iPad and restore it from my latest iCloud backup, which I did. At first everything looked good on my iBooks, but then some pdfs started to, once again, disappear. Unfuckingbelievable.

SOrry to hear that. Its so annoying. Mine won't even put new pdfs into ibooks now. It just hangs. Adobe acrobat from now on, they have a cloud service too.

not ideal but like you i have wasted hours on it that i don't have !!!!!!

Hello all, as it happens I had the iPad Pro delivered today. I am pleased to report that all my PDF's from iCloud loaded on there within seconds, no problem. Therefore I can only conclude it's older devices that must be the issue, as even after installing the new iOS update 9.3 yesterday, it still wouldn't download on my old iPad 4. I know it doesn't help all of you that are on older devices. Apple must create a fix for older machines, I guess, but maybe that won't happen now until iOS 10.

I Have an iphone 6 plus with largest storage i could get. Maybe in Apple's eye thats old. Not in my book or bank statement.

sign up for adobe acrobat / dropbox. Much more reliable.

@pcurtis fair comment, when things like this happen it reminds me of my old Microsoft days.

This problem has been around for years.  It is endlessly frustrating (particularly as there doesn't seem to be an end in sight).  You do an OS update.  Boom, all the books that you didn't buy through Apple are gone.  My way around this has been to use Calibre (which is free) to store all my books on my Mac.  So I load them into Calibre on my mac and then send them to my iPad either by email or through the Calibre server.  Either way, when they disappear, they have to be reloaded.  That can be tedious.

Yes, same experience of losing all pdf files after the latest "upgrade" on the iPhone.  luckily I still have the data on the iPad, and this will no longer be "updated" to ensure its data remains accessable.  Thank you Apple- NOT

I have the answer if you selected to upload everything to iCloud:

    Mac

Available ePub, iBooks Author books, and PDF files in iCloud Drive automatically download to your iBooks library.

If you turn off iBooks in System Preferences > iCloud > iCloud Drive Options, iBooks items that you save to iCloud Drive will no longer be available on that device.

This was turned off for me. I wasted 2 hours and this was all that needed to be done. It is not set to enabled as a default.
