Macbook pro display blinking when connecting external display

Whenever I connect a remote display over DVI (have tried both Apple DVI->Mini DisplayPort adapter as well as custom DVI->HDMI adapter), my Macbook pro display is blinking for a long time, like 1-2 minutes before succeeding. This does not happen with VGA (tried Apple VGA->Mini DisplayPort adapter). It's illustrated here:

This is annoying as *****. For example: Whenever I visit the coffee machine or the toilet, I have to wait 1-2 minutes before I can resume my work, because the screen has been shut off before I can come back. And don't suggest me to extend the shut-off period, that is not a viable solution. This happens every morning as well when i get to work and turn on the computer.

Any help would be greatly appreciated!!

Cheers

MacBook Pro (Retina, 13-inch,Early 2015), iOS 9.3.1

Hi ColonelKermit,

I understand that you are seeing an issue with your display when attaching it to an external monitor. You may wish to try troubleshooting this issue by resetting your NVRAM on your computer, which is explained in the following article:

You may also wish to boot your computer into Safe Mode, which may help affect the situation:
