Q: Some Nano content not shown in iTunes; can't delete

My 3rd gen Nano is recognized by iTunes (v 12.3.2.35 - 64 bit), and much of the Nano's content is visible in the Nano menu on iTunes. However, there are some podcasts and albums that are not visible/listed. In other words when I click the Podcast and Music catagories (or any of the catagories) under the On My Device heading, certain podcasts/albums are not on the list. Since these items don't show up in the iTunes Nano menu, I am unable to delete them. These same podcasts also are not listed in any of the Nano's own menu catagorys (podcasts, albums, songs, etc). The only way to see/find them in the Nano is to use Search (and enter the first letter of the podcast). The search results list the titles of the podcasts as well as the their catagory. Their catagory is appropriately listed as Podcast, yet strangely, again, they aren't listed in the Nano's Podcast menu catagory. Same goes for the albums - listed as Album but not found in Album menu catagory. Any thoughts on why this is?

Is there a way to search the Nano's content in iTunes? The only search options available in the upper right search box are My Library and iTunes Store; nothing for the Nano.

If there isn't a way to search the Nano, does anyone have an idea on how I can delete the "hidden" content, and how to prevent it from happening again?

Humbly, I beseech y'all....

The likely cause is data corruption on the iPod.  The simplest solution is to do a Restore on the iPod using iTunes.  This erases the iPod, reinstalls its software, and sets it to default settings.

Use iTunes on your Mac or PC to restore your iPhone, iPad, or iPod to factory settings - Apple Support

After the Restore, re-load your content as before, from your iTunes library.

    Thanks Kenichi,

This raises a few follow-up questions:

    • Is the data corruption a general overall corruption, or specific to the "hidden" podcasts.
    • Does this mean that since the corrupted data originally came from my iTunes files, that those files in my iTunes are corrupted too? Would that also mean that the Windows files are corrupted as well?
    • Is there a way to investigate and delete which data is corrupted in my iTunes? It would be near catastrophic if I had to delete everything from there too.

    Thanks again,

    Brad

The data corruption is probably only on the iPod, if you have not noticed any problems in your iTunes library on the computer.  There's no way for me to know if there is general data corruption on your computer.  You should employ a data backup practice (for iTunes data and the rest of your user data), because your computer and its drive can fail at any time and without warning.  That would also protect you from data corruption.  For Mac users, there's a built-in feature called Time Machine, which does automatic backups (every hour) to an external drive (as a background process).  You should use something like that...

For your iTunes data, this Apple document describes how to back it up manually, to an external drive

Well I guess I should've mentioned that I often have problems with iTunes, though this may be a topic for a different discussion group/forum.

Problems don't occur if I'm only doing things in my itunes library and Nano. However when I go to iTunes Store, often times there is a lengthy delay when I click on something or try to do a search, etc. Once this problem starts it will carry over to my iTunes library when I leave the store. Other times when I'm in the Store it freezes and doesn't respond at all - to the point where I have to go into Windows Task Manager and force iTunes to close. These problems started about 6 months ago. I'm using the same computer and OS as when iTunes worked properly.

In the past I've tried uninstalling/re-installing iTunes but it didn't help; I guess that is because any corrupted data/files/content gets loaded back in. The question is: how do I track down the corrupted data in my itunes library? I have no problems taking on a complicated solution, if that's what's required.

Thanks for the backup suggestion. However, I don't want to back up any corrupted data, so, again, I need to track it down and illuminate it before doing a backup.

    Thanks again Kenichi
