what changed since it worked? what version of Aperture and of the OS?

It sounds like you have opened a different Aperture library, have a look through your computer for other libraries.
Aperture may open a different Aperture library if it cannot access your main Aperture library. where are you keeping your Aperture library? Is it on an external drive or in your Pictures folder as is the default?
Did Aperture crash before this happened?
