Q: iBooks has suddenly stopped syncing between my iPhone and iPad

iBooks has suddenly stopped syncing between my iPhone 6s and iPad Mini.  Both are running iOS 9.3, and the syncing had been working fine for several days after I updated both devices.  Both syncing options (bookmarks/notes and collections) are turned on for both devices.  And it doesn't matter on which device I add a bookmark or note; it won't sync to the other device.

I've rebooted both devices and turned the syncing options off and back on, but I haven't been able to get it to work.

Any ideas as to what's going on?

Thanks.

iPhone 6s, iOS 9.3, also running iPad Mini on iOS 9.3

I believe that using link will help Apple to understand how widespread the problem is so completely support the notion of providing Apple with feedback. So if you guys/gals who loves to read have a bit of spare time, please submit feedback using link above and below.

I wonder why Apple is silent regarding this? As for the «Safari link»-bug appeared in 9.3 (when the links became irresponsive), they at least promised to resolve that issue, which they did in 9.3.1. But now they seem not to know about that issue. I have posted several feedbacks here: http://www.apple.com/feedback/ibooks.html , and I advise and ask you to do the same .

I just left feedback as well. BTW, in reference to some earlier comments... I am using the same Apple ID for everything and have been for a few years now. My iCloud and iTunes and iBooks is on one account and I am having the same issue. I have submitted info to engineering through a Sr. Advisor and will try to follow up later today. On the one hand it ***** that so many are being affected, but it is at least reassuring to know I am not the only one.

Also having this issue with my bookmarks not syncing between my two devices - both my ipad mini and iphone are updated to the new OS.  I just started using iBooks and thought I was going crazy considering the option to sync is turned on and the iBooks app is turned on in the iCloud settings for both devices.  I've tried everything listed in this topic to fix the problem and nothing has worked.  Hopefully they will fix this soon - the issue is turning me off to using iBooks!

I called AppleCare and we tried a few things that didn't work.  (My bookmarks seem to sync every now and then, but rarely.)

The rep escalated the issue to the Engineering  Dept. to look into it.   He called me back today with some questions that the Eng. Dept had.

He mentioned that they have received a number of complaints about this issue and they know it needs to be looked into...so they are working on it.   It may need a fix in the next iOS update.....  but at least we know they know about the issue and are working for a fix.

I'm sure they will figure it out....

I've been on to Apple support as well, spoke to an engineer who was able to reproduce the problem. He's going to call back tomorrow with an update.

Good to know. I've also spoken to support today, though I didn't get as far as the engineers. I was, however, added to the list of people that engineers know are having the issue. Please keep us posted if you hear anything.

So, I've read thru all the posts and have tried everything.  So far I've achieved some patchy results.

    First, my system.

MacBook Pro withOS X El Capitan, 10.11.4.

    • iBooks version 1.5

iPad Air 2 running iOS 9.3.1

    • iBooks is up to date.

    iPhone 6s running iOS 9.3.1

    • iBooks is also up to date

So here are some of the things I've tried.

    1. Delete the book from both the iPad and MacBook inventory then re-download from the iCloud.  This has had some mixed results.  It appears the books have to be deleted at the same time, apps shut down, then re-started.  Once I do the download I tend to get all the bookmarks but none of the notes.

    2. Signed out and signed back into the iCloud.  This had not effect other than to just take time.

All of this is becoming increasingly frustrating. Every time I call apple help its like they are stuck on stupid.  I'm constantly re-describing the problem, going thru the rudimentary suggestions all under the premise that somehow this is an "operator error."  Most frustratingly is when they point me to a website for assistance and its just typical apple promotional site that talks about synching across systems.

I have the exact same issue. Talked to an Apple support staff on the phone last week and got told that the issue has been escalated.

One thing I found is that before the 9.3.1 upgrade, every time when I close a book / pdf in iBooks on my iPhone or iPad, I remember there was a spinning icon at the top bar which I assume indicates that iBooks is sync'ing the bookmarks, notes and reading position. After the upgrade, I do not see that spinning icon anymore. Unfortunately I do not have a device running the old version anymore and thus can't confirm if that is the case.

    Still no updates from Apple...

This morning a few things have started syncing again, it's all very flaky though, read position syncs the most often, bookmarks and notes are extremely sporadic, none of it syncs with any degree of certainty. But, it has synced something, which means iOS 9.3 / 9.3.1 or OS X 10.4.11 either isn't the culprit or they aren't the only culprit. It seems more like a backend / server side issue to me but it's possible something in the recent release is triggering that instability.

Anyone know if this is fixed in 9.3.2 beta that was released yesterday?

AApple called me yesterday with more questions about the problem do I doubt they've fixed it in 9.3.2 yet, but since it's a beta, there may still be time to add it before the final release.  Hope so.

Well, I just tested the syncing between my iPhone 6s Plus and iPad Pro, and everything seems to be working. I'm not at home, so I can't check to see if my iMac and MBP are also syncing, so I don't know if this issue is totally resolved. And, there's no way to know if it will keep working. But, for now, it works! Progress!

    Gregory McBride and samfromsheffield,

Did you upgrade to the 9.3.2 beta for it to work, or is it working on 9.3.1?
