Q: I need to reinstall OS X Mountain Lion 10.8

Hi,

I recently had a drive problem, so I had to reinstall everything onto a new drive. I bought the Mountain Lion update back in the day, still have my receipt.

My problem is that the only installer I have is 10.8.5 update, which tells me I have to have the 10.8 installed. My clone drive only has 10.6.8, as this was the last time I cloned it, as was stable. Because of certain hardware I am using on this particular computer (Avid Pro Tools Hd 10) I cannot update any further than 10.8.5 So, where do I get an installer for Mountain Lion that can work for my situation? I did contact Apple, am awaiting their reply.

Thanks for your time in reading / responding to my question.

Log into the Mac App Store with the Apple ID you used to buy Mountain Lion and click on the Purchases tab. If you got Mountain Lion by purchasing a code from the online Apple Store, log into the Apple ID you redeemed the code into.

    Hi Niel,

I have a Mountain Lion installer.

I am looking for the 10.8.0 installer, because the one I have, 10.8.5 update, is asking for an earlier version of 10.8

Did you read my post? I thought I was clear, but maybe I wasn't clear enough.

Yes, I did. Proceed as described above.

What you have is an updater, not a full installer.

    I need a full installer.

The only thing I can get through the Apple Store is the 10.8.5 updater.

So, once again, how do I get a full installer, one that will allow me to get to where I need to be?

    Thanks

By downloading it from the Mac App Store as I described above. The updater you found came from Apple Support, not the Mac App Store.

I am re downloading on my more up to date laptop... I hope it is a full installer, and not just an update.

Thanks for the quick replies, I hope to be on track soon enough.

I'll report once this is successfully fixed, and what it took.

On my newer laptop I was able to download the full installer.

I still do not know how I had the other one, the 10.8.5 updater, both showing up in the app store (it said downloaded) and in my applications folder.

I should be good now, as I am copying the installer right now from a USB stick to my tower.
