Q: Apple 3rd gen not working after new router installed do I put in codes manually

Hi recently had power outages etc and a new router installed in for wifi but now my apple tv 3 does not work but only home sharing/settings screen show up I am signed in on Mac for home sharing.  When I go to Network settings I see configuring is automatic but the router shows n/a does this mean I have to put codes in???

So here is my conclusion.  Got a laptop clicked on wi fi connection and pw and did not work, tried with the wall port connection and got an error message not connected to router.  So I switched around plugs from that wall mount thinking it may be screwed but it worked from my other connection in the other room to the Lap top I noticed that the WAN LED was not on and I also had RESET Apple Tv it worked and all the router/dns codes were there,  but then the laptop did not work or my MAC, so switched connections again and now the WAN light is working, and APPLE TV and Laptop not working and router/dns codes missing from Apple TV.   So basically to watch APPLE I have to switch connections which I did not ever have to do before, therefore I am assuming it is something to do with installation of the new main router.

    Update

In the midst of writing this and trying to remember what exactly I did I decided to switch connections again from the wall in the other room where the router is and restart the router and guess what my page popped up on my computer and now  Everything works with out the stupid router on.  I AM TOTALLY CONFUSED  but not touching a thing lol.

Thank you so much PROTODD for all your help and keep your fingers crossed.

    Have a Great Day

    Hi Wendy,

Your mention of "wall ports" and "the people upstairs" make me very nervous. Most residences do not have internal cat 5 ethernet wiring. Do you know what these wall ports are (or were) connected to? I'm guessing they were to the "main" router upstairs, which interfaces to the DSL or other service from Bell Canada. You may need to get your neighbors to reconnect the line to one of your wall ports. If that's not possible, you should be able to connect your router to the working wall port, then use wifi for ATV. You'd select the wifi network generated by your router. If this leaves your computer disconnected, and it's an ancient desktop (like mine), you can buy a wifi USB gizmo for it, and do everything wireless.

It occurs to me that you may have configured your router to work with the old router upstairs, in some way that's incompatible with the new one. You might try a little diagram, showing what's connected to what, as far as you know. Someone with network savvy might then be able to clarify. It seems like the main unknown is the configuration, and connection of the new main router. And you're trying to discover that by poking from the outside. your working wired computer connection seems like a good place to start.

Every device has a unique MAC address. Is it possible that the new main router has been configured to accept only the MAC address from your computer? If so,  that would be bad, and.would need to be changed to accept the MAC address of your router. Note, this is not the temporary IP address supplied by DHCP, this is a global name, unique to each device.

I just reread your last post and realized that you said everything works without the router being on. Your computer is connected to the main router through one wall port. ATV is connected to the main router through the other wall port or over your neighbor's wifi. That's ok as long as your usage does not conflict with theirs.
