Q: Battery not recharging but.......

Hi,

I'm the proud owner of an Ipod Classic but since two days the battery is no longer recharging using the Apple power adapter

Already tried a new cable and a lot of different adapters but nothing works.................unless I plug it into the cigarette lighter of my car. Then the battery starts recharging.

It also doesn't connect to ITunes any longer.

By the way, I tried to get in touch with Apple Support but that's not working. They want the serialnumber which is unreadable on the Ipod and can't be found on ITunes since it doesn't connect to it....................

You might find the serial number on your Apple ID Support Profile, if that iPod was ever registered with your Apple ID

    https://supportprofile.apple.com/

The iPod classic can charge using FireWire charging, which uses different pins on the 30-pin dock connector (and a different voltage), compared to USB charging.  Older iPod docks and other charging accessories use FireWire charging, because the older iPods connect to Macs using FireWire.  So what may be happening here is that your iPod's dock connector is worn out or damaged in a way that prevents a connection for USB charging.  But it still connects for FireWire charging and maybe your car "cigarette lighter" charger uses FireWire charging, so it works there.

Your connection to your computer is USB, so that would not work either.  If the iPod's battery is charged (using the car charger), try putting it into Disk Mode

Putting iPod into Disk Mode - Apple Support

Disconnect all other USB devices from your computer.  You can leave standard USB keyboard and mouse connected, if used.  If your computer is a laptop, connect its power adapter so it's not running on battery power.  Run iTunes and connect iPod to a direct USB port on the computer, by itself.  Is there any response to being connected, on the iPod's screen or in iTunes?

Hi, I didn't register the Ipod so the serial number will remain a mistery. I wonder why Apple needs it to give some support. Anyway, I placed it into Disk Mode and connected it to my computer but it keeps saying it's Okay to disconnect.....

Apple uses the serial number to determine support coverage for the item (including AppleCare if purchased).  For example, during the first three months of ownership, you get free phone tech support.  During the first year, the item is covered for manufacturing defects, under the one-year warranty.  If you buy AppleCare, various support services are upgraded and extended.  All of that coverage info is linked to the item's serial number.

If you did not actually check your Support Profile, the iPod may be on it automatically.  Most of my Apple products are there, even though I never added anything manually to "register" it.

Anyway, I placed it into Disk Mode and connected it to my computer but it keeps saying it's Okay to disconnect.....

So, it sounds like there is no connection to USB.  If you tried multiple cables, to rule out a faulty cable, and multiple USB connection points, what I said previously (faulty dock connector on iPod) may be the reason.
