Q: move Aperture "book" to Photos

Hi all

I've been a hold-out with Aperture -- used to it and it works. However, I now have a problem: I've created a "book" in Aperture and would like to "buy" the book -- have Apple print it like they have in the past. However, now they won't do that from Aperture -- I have to do it in Photos.

But it's not clear to me how I move the book to Photos -- I've spent some time on this and don't want to lose the layouts, text, etc.

If I export the Aperture library to Photos, will the books move as well? Is there a special way to export a book from Aperture to make this work? Or am I stuck?

Thanks in advance!

Basically the answer is you can not

Photos has almost none of the Aperture book capabilities

the choices are to redo the book in Photos (probably not an acceptable choice), use a third party printer like PrestoPhoto who claims to be able to print Aperture books (with some limitations) or to make PDFs of the pages and use them as full page photos in Photos - see this Aperture thread for the discussion - how to export a book made in Aperture to make a similar book in Photos?

    Hi Larry

Thanks for the advice. I reviewed the conversation at that link. I don't think that tricking Photos into making a book from a bunch of PDF pages is going to work for me. I looked at that carefully: the problem is that Photos doesn't generate books in the sizes that Aperture offered in the past. My current project is one that is 8.5 x 11, softcover, using a template I created (different layouts on different pages). Ordered this in the past in Aperture, no problem, good service and nice photo book, but Photos doesn't offer that size now. So my new project won't look like the old ones.

In looking at the links at that conversation, it seems that Apple made the sizing of photo books in Photos to fix that they'd offered (for the most part) in iPhoto, and didn't consider Aperture.

I'm looking at Presto: reasonable enough setup and they'll take my PDF file of the book. But they do want an extra $10 to remove their idiot logo. Grrrr...

I am certainly not expecting compensation; just trying to get a problem solved. Thanks for the explanation of policy here.

Forgive me, I'm not the one doing the contacting. I initiated the thread looking for a way to move a photo book from Aperture to Photos. The person 'thestorygirl' is the one making the offer (to me). I'm not selling anything, and I'm not a professional photographer.

I hope that clarifies, and thanks

    Steve:

There's a way you can get jpeg images of each Aperture book page and use them in a PHotos book with each page with a 1 photo per page layout.  That is if you want to continue with Photos to order the book.

Just follow Steps 1 - 5 of this tutorial: P03 - Creating an iDVD Slideshow from a Photos Library Book.  Then import the jpeg files into the Photos library and make a book project with them.

Also if you look at my reply to Megan you can see who I was replying to:

That would fix part of the problem, and I'm pretty good at converting images from one format to another -- plenty of tools and experience. However, my previous books in Aperture were formatted as softcover, 8.5 x 11 inches (convenient for a casual coffee-table book, which is what these were). That option doesn't exist in Photos: I can get hardcover at that size, or softcover at 8 x 8 which requires me to reformat the book. With that realization moving the photo book to Photos isn't really an option for me: I might as well start over and create a new book in Photos, and just import the images. The alternative (which I increasingly prefer) is to export the book as a PDF and find a service (e.g., Presto) that will print the book from the PDF without a lot of fuss.

I must say that I am not keen on the current version of Photos to create photo books -- pretty restricted layouts. Perhaps that will improve with time.

I'm also not keen on some of the services out there: try to get Shutterfly to just take your PDF and print it. Just try. Ditto MyPublisher. They all want you to use their on-line page layout system. Hey guys, I've done the work already.

I also confess I don't understand why Apple turned off their printing service within Aperture -- the people who still use Aperture, like me, have already made it clear that we prefer that to Photos or Adobe Lightroom, at least for know. Deprecating a very useful feature isn't going to get me to move to Photos, it's going to make me find a work-around.

I see it now, thank you. I get an email every time someone replies and thought it was aimed at me. Thanks for the clarification.

Forgot that the 8.5 x 11 softcover wasn't offered anymore.

I found this thread after I stopped emoting over what Apple has done to us.  I have been using aperture for several years and have made numerous photo books.  I went to reprint 4 copies of a book I had made of scanned family photos and found out I could not print it.  I am not happy with any of the options, but think I will give Presto printing a try.  I have 4 other books in various stages of completion.  I am most unhappy that we were given no notice that this was coming.  What has happened to their famous customer service.   I will keep following this thread for any additional ideas, and will let you know how Presto Printing works.

Please do. I'm going to pull the trigger and try a book at Presto as well -- nothing to lose at this point.
