Q: I wish to burn a project onto Blu ray disc using the European standard PAL - what should my setting be when starting off the project - I find it all confusing !!

I am new to Final Cut Pro X and have downloaded the free trial and will be purchasing it, and my eventual aim is to create a project and then my end output will be  Bluray discs which I wish to play on my home Blu ray player.

Do I need to set the European standard as PAL ( as I have always done on previous video editing software, or does it matter .

I find the whole subject very confusing and would be very grateful for any help or suggestions

Thank You

Chris

It shouldn't matter to your BD  player.

As a general matter, it's usually best to edit in the format that the material was shot and recorded in. So if you shot 25 fps, keep it at that frame rate, Set the project properties to automatic and Final Cut will create the new project with settings that match the first clip added to the timeline. When done editing, choose Share > Blu Ray.

    Good luck.

Thanks for that Russ - when I tried a project and I started off with the World Intro - when I came to burn it the system told me that the project was in NTSC and did I want to convert to PAL - I did so as that is what I have always used - but this took time to do even on  a short project. Are you suggesting I should open with my own clip, shot on my own camcorder, or can I change the properties of the World Intro as that is probably the one I will use to open my videos.

Sorry to be a pain, but I never had this problem when I used Windows and Corel VideStudio as I was always able to preset PAL.

I really am a nerd when it comes to NTSC,PAL etc etc

    Thanks for help from anyone

If your camera's clip's are PAL and your project settings are set to Automatic (in the New Project dialog), FCP will create a PAL project.

Thanks to all for your help - the opening clip I will use will be "ATMOSPHERE" so can anyone verify the settings I will need to have my project in PAL format

    Thank you

EEasiest way is to drop a clip in the timeline. Then add the title and move the title clip to the beginning.

It's true that these days NTSC players can play PAL discs and vice versa, but if you really want to avoid problems I would make sure your whole process is PAL. Set your camera is set to PAL (if you can set it), Create a new Project and choose "custom settings" and set the Rate to 25p, edit away, and when you export it should respect the 25p PAL.

Most NLE and DVD Authoring apps default to NTSC.

Select PAL in the appropriate Setup Preferences for each application.

As already mentioned, if you start off in PAL it's best to stay in PAL throughout the whole process.
