Target display mode -> Use your iMac as a display with Target Display Mode - Apple Support
It sounds like you are putting your 2010 27" iMac in Target display mode so that the 27" iMac is acting as a display.
It is unclear if you are booting the 2008 20" iMac in target disk mode or not.

Apr 10, 2016 1:25 PM in response to Duaneby DWDDoolittle,Sorry, the 20" is started in Target Mode and the Host 27" is started holding the Option/Alt button to select start-up discs. I see the 20" with the Firewire Icon and when I select it it simply freezes and does nothing.

Apr 11, 2016 2:28 PM in response to DWDDoolittleby Duane,In the process of your 20" getting the broken screen is it possible that the hard drive was also damaged? Did the iMac fall?

Apr 11, 2016 2:42 PM in response to Duaneby DWDDoolittle,I am not sure. My son acquired it free recently at a dump free store. It powers on with the backlighting. It looks like they tried to remove the screen, as the outer glass screen cover is missing. Looks like they botched it for sure haha. Once I get a Mini DVI to VGA Adapter I will try an external monitor. We will see what happens. In Target Disc Mode I see their files, etc. that were left on it. Thought we might be able to fix it up or use to for parts.
