Q: Failed to update to iTunes 12.3.3

I tried to update to iTunes 12.3.3

Then tried to uninstall and reinstalled but failed every time with the error:

"Could not open key: UNKNOWN\Components\[LongStringOfLettersAndNumbers]\[LongStringOfLettersAndNumbe rs]"

I have tried this suggestion ("Could not open key: UNKNOWN\Components\[LongStringOfLettersAndNumbers]\[LongStringOfLettersAndNumbe rs]" error messages when installing iTunes for Windows) but didn't resolve my problem.

Also done this: https://support.apple.com/en-us/HT204275

and this: If you can't install or update iTunes for Windows - Apple Support

but still cannot resolve the problem

I'm using Windows 7

Thank you

I'd normally expect b noir's user tip to help with that error. Try repairing any Apple components in the programs and features control panel and then right-click on the downloaded installer and use Run as administrator.

For general advice see Troubleshooting issues with iTunes for Windows updates.

The steps in the second box are a guide to removing everything related to iTunes and then rebuilding it which is often a good starting point unless the symptoms indicate a more specific approach. Review the other boxes and the list of support documents further down the page in case one of them applies.

The further information area has direct links to the current and recent builds in case you have problems downloading, need to revert to an older version or want to try the iTunes for Windows (64-bit - for older video cards) release as a workaround for performance issues or compatibility with third party software.

Your library should be unaffected by these steps but there also links to backup and recovery advice should it be needed.

If you've tried the suggestions above without success then another option is to revert to the previous build of iTunes that worked for you. See the roll back advice at iTunes installers. Rolling back from 12.3.3 will involve restoring the pre-upgrade library from the Previous iTunes Libraries folder.
