    Hi

The last few digits are the last four digits of your Device Account Number, not the last four digits of your payment card.

To see those digits on your iPhone, go to: Wallet > tap to select that card > tap on the "i" icon (lower-right) > under the Card Information heading, the last few digits of your card number and your Device Account Number are shown.

The Device Account Number relates to the unique combination of your payment card plus the device upon which it has been added to Apple Pay (ie an iPhone, iPad or Apple Watch).

Your card issuer may be able to advise why your transaction was declined.

    Hi Jonathan

Thank you for your rep[y  The payment was declined twice and on the printed slip it was the card number's last four digits that were incorrect.  The card was then used to pay in the normal way and was accepted.  All the numbers on the declined slip were the same as the accepted slip except for the card number which bears no resemblance to any cards I have.   I shall follow your advice in your second reply and contact the bank.

The last four digits on the slip are not supposed to reflect any information on your actual payment card. Although they may be described on the receipt as being part of your card number, they are instead part of the Device Account Number.

One of the security features of Apple Pay is that the Device Account Number - used when paying via Apple Pay - is entirely different to your actual card number.

Follow the steps that I described above to check the last few digits of the Device Account Number for that card within Wallet on your iPhone.

Tap on the card within Wallet, then tap on the "i" / info icon (lower-right).

    On the next screen:

    Hi

Yes, I now understand you.  The DAN is shown on Apple pay slips and the last four digits of the card number when using the card "normally".  The correct DAN is shown on the declined slips and, of course, on my old successful Apple pay slips.  So I will have to inquire at the bank why it declined this last time.  Thanks for your help.
