Q: Trackpad cursor freezes

Macbook Pro Retina 2016 13"

Have barely used this laptop but a few times now the cursor has frozen completely.

I have to restart the laptop to get it working again.

Please advise best way to restart (other than pushing power button down and holding) - and why this might be happening.

Thanks

The next time you have to close by holding down the power button:

do the SMC reset and the NVRAM reset:

    SMC and PRAM Reset

    Thank you.

    The link for SMC says:

    • Shut down the computer.
    • Unplug the computer's power cord and ALL peripherals.
    • Wait 15 seconds.
    • Attach the computers power cable.
    • Wait another 5 seconds and press the power button to turn on the computer.

I had nothing plugged in - was running off battery power.

So I imagine I would then turn off anyway, wait 15 seconds, then attach the power cable, wait 5 seconds and turn back on.

You mentioned NVRAM reset but it says PRAM Reset as below:

    • Shut down the computer.
    • Locate the following keys on the keyboard: Command, Option, P, and R. You will need to hold these keys down simultaneously in step 4.
    • Turn on the computer.
    • Press and hold the Command-Option-P-R keys. You must press this key combination before the gray screen appears.
    • Hold the keys down until the computer restarts and you hear the startup sound for the second time.
    • Release the keys.

Do you hold the keys Command, Option, P and R while turning the computer on at the same time or hold them first, then turn power button on, then go back to the keys?

    What is NVRAM

And at the end of all this is there an explanation for why the cursor freezes and what I am resetting?  I am a bit hesitant if the cursor comes back after turning on and off rather than going through the steps above.  If there is good reason for it then I will do so.
    Thanks for your advice.
