Q: Can't send iCloud.com email

Something has happened in the last week that has stopped Mail (on Mac and iOS) sending emailaddress@icloud.com emails.

  • My other IMAP/SMTP accounts are working fine.
  • Connection Doctor is all green, including iCloud SMTP
  • iCloud Web mail sends OK

A specific issue is that my iCloud email address doesn't appear as an option in the From: drop down in the mail message editor. I only see my other email accounts.

So the message fails to send and sits in my Outbox. Then I get the "Cannot send message using the server..." dialog saying iCloud failed to send using one of my other email account's SMTP servers. If I select iCloud and try to send again it just sits in my Outbox. I can't decide if this is a client issue or something has changed in my iCloud account.

I have checked the iCloud SMTP settings and added my iCloud user name (Apple ID) and password. The only other issue is the email address it is trying to send from is the same email address that I use as my Apple ID.

Any suggestions?

    Hi SteveGrr,

I understand you are not able to send email messages from your @icloud.com account.  You mentioned this only started happening in the past week.  Can you think of anything that has changed, such as an update to an iOS or OS X operating system?  The resource below will guide you through some steps for troubleshooting your iCloud mail.  I've highlighted some key information for you.  Click on the link for complete details.

    Get help using iCloud Mail

If you receive an alert when you send a message from your @icloud.com email address using Mail on your Mac

“This message could not be delivered and will remain in your Outbox until it can be delivered. The reason for the failure is: An error occurred while delivering this message via the smtp server: server name.”

    1. Open Mail and choose Mail > Preferences.
    2. Click the Accounts tab.
    3. Select your iCloud account.
    4. Click the Account Information tab.
    5. Choose your iCloud account from the Outgoing Mail Server (SMTP) menu. If you choose Edit SMTP Server List, you won't see your iCloud SMTP server as an option.

    Take care,

    Hi Judy,

I went through the Get Help using iCloud Mail steps, and upgraded from iOS 10.11.3 to 10.11.4

Going through the steps you recommend:

    1. Open Mail and choose Mail > Preferences. DONE
    2. Click the Accounts tab. DONE
    3. Select your iCloud account. DONE
    4. Click the Account Information tab. DONE
    5. Choose your iCloud account from the Outgoing Mail Server (SMTP) menu. If you choose Edit SMTP Server List, you won't see your iCloud SMTP server as an option.

iCloud is one of the options in the Outgoing Mail Server (SMTP) dropdown and I have it selected. Going through the settings:

    Account Information

    Account Type: IMAP

    Description: iCloud

Alias: Steve **** **** - this is my Apple ID

Email Address: **** - I think this should be ****

    Full Name: Steve *****

    Incoming Mail Server: p11-imap.mail.me.com

    User Name: ****

    Outgoing Mail Server (SMTP): iCloud

    TLS Certificate: None

One issue is that when I get the @Save changes to the "iCloud" IMAP account? prompt the save dialog doesn't close and I have to force-quit Mail.

The recent change that I think triggered all these problems is me changing the email address associated with my Apple ID.

    Thanks, Steve

    Hi Steve,

Thanks for sharing your updates.  At this point, it would be helpful for one of our online technical advisors to help you get to the bottom of this.  They will have the tools to share your computer screen and walk you through your personal settings, which for your security we can't do here.  Click here to initiate that support, and refer the advisor to this thread to continue the conversation.

    Take care,

    Hi Judy,

Just to close the loop; I spoke with one of your colleagues and they talked me through signing out of iCloud and logging back in again using my @icloud address as user ID, rather than the email address I had set as my Apple ID. This resolved the problem (although it is still not intuitive to allow different email addresses to be entered as the user ID). Using the non-iCloud email address caused an alias to be set on my iCloud email preferences and preventing me from sending from my iCloud address.

Hopefully posting this will save someone else from the same error.

    Thanks for your help,

    Steve
