Q: iPhone is disabled - connect to iTunes

Hi, my iPhone 4 is showing a message saying: "iPhone is disabled - connect to iTunes", after another person put the wrong passcode 10 times. Searching the internet, read that I must have an iTunes or iCloud backup to save my data, or restore the device and lost everything. The problem is that I never used iTunes or iCloud to do a backup of my data, and I don't wanna lose all the data stored in my device. There's a way to make the iPhone ask the passcode again, so I can put the right passcode and enable the iPhone again? Please, I'm desperate...

Sorry for any mistakes, English isn't my first language.

Thank you

iPhone 4

You're right, it doesn't hurt to try. Thank you!

What happens if, with iPhone in recovery mode, instead choose the option Restore, I choose Update: If you forgot the passcode for your iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch, or your device is disabled - Apple Support?

Will the iOS be updated, but the iPhone will still be disabled, or the device may ask again for the passcode? Anyone knows what happens in this case?

If you restore the backup the same passcode will be there but since you know the correct passcode it may be worth a try, little to lose but time. I do not know if it will still be disabled.

Okay, but, how I said before, I don't have a backup. Choosing the option Restore with iPhone in recovery mode, will restore the device to factory settings, according to article: If you forgot the passcode for your iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch, or your device is disabled - Apple Support

What I want to know is if someone knows what happens if, instead choose Restore, in recovery mode, I choose Update.

Forgot....      Chose Update instead. Restore will install a clean iOS and delete your data - and if you had a backup you could restore it. I have not had to do this and I don't know what happens with Update but it is clear what happens with Restore. Update may or may not preserve your data but you got nothing more to try at this point. Good luck.

Okay, I think I'll try this. I just wonder if someone knows what happens in this case, because I'm afraid to try...

From what I read on another thread, with a problem similar to yours, the poster selected Update, and the phone updated, however in the end, it went right back to the recovery mode screen, and it was still forced to recover. He did not report on loss of data, but he was told the same thing you were here that you would. I believe he just resolved himself to the fact that he was going to lose the data.

All right, thank you for your help. Anyway, as you said yourself, I'm already in a difficult position, so trying somehow to recover my data or enable the phone again isn't worse than losing everything. Good luck to me!

If you remember your password you may be in luck. I forgot mine but knew it had to be something I would eventually remember (like a birthday or post code etc). After attempting to enter passcode 10 or 11 times (can't remember exactly), my iPhone running iOS 8.2 was disabled. The plug into iTunes symbol appeared, then according to online instructions I was supposed to restore. However I didn't have a backup so didn't want to do that. my solution? I plugged device in to PC, started iTunes. Closed iTunes and uninstalled, unplugged device. Then I reinstalled the latest version of iTunes and plugged in device  to PC and opened itunes again. At this point, my device passcode entry was reset back to zero, so I had another 10 or 11 attempts. I did this process (uninstall and reinstall itunes) 3 times (30+ passcode attempts) until I got the right one. i have since tested this on another device running iOS 8 and worked.

Thank you so much for your help, chigglesmeloy, but could you please give more details about how did you do it? I have some doubts about your method:

Did you already had synced your iPhone with iTunes in to PC that you tried this method? Or, did you already had connected your iPhone in to PC that you use to do that, before? You said that iTunes symbol appeared, so your device was on recovery mode? You uninstalled iTunes with the device plugged to PC, unplugged the device, reinstalled iTunes, plugged the device again and, when you see, it was asking for passcode again? Did you do that with iPhone on recovery mode or normal mode?

Sorry if I'm asking too much, but I want to make sure I'm doing everything right if I try this method, so I can have a chance to enable iPhone again and recover my data. I never connected my device to any PC before it become disabled, so I'm not sure if your method will work, thats why I'm asking for your help.

That's it, and thank you again for your help!

No i had not previously synced it with that PC (as I just put a new hard drive a week prior), nor did I have any backup that PC.

The phone was not in recovery mode. The connect to iTunes symbol came up when phone was disabled after i exceed number of allowed passcode attempts (10 or 11). Although if it doesn't work in normal mode, you can try it in recovery mode.

I Don't think it matters if your phone is plugged in when you install / uninstall itunes, but try plugging in before you uninstall, and then again after you reinstall latest version of iTunes. You could try turning phone off before plugging back in (after reinstalling itunes), and then turning phone on when plugged in (can't recall exactly, not sure it matters). Regardless, there isn't any risk to your phone by trying this technique (and variations of it), so you should definitely try it. It worked for me both times I did it.
