The video clip should have been saved the Import event shown in the Import window you used to capture video from your inbuilt camera. In my image below, that was "Updated Projects":
The name of your location will not be "Updated Projects", but is this how you set your input location?
If so, you should be able to find your event by clicking the iMovie Library reveal triangle in your iMovie's "Media" window to show the entire list:
If that doesn't work, you should be able to find your event by Control-Clicking on the "iMovie Library" iCon in your iMovie folder to allow you to "Show Package Contents."
Individual event folders are revealed in the Package Contents.

Apr 12, 2016 5:38 PM in response to rmar42by rmar42,Unfortunately neither of those worked. My hope was that this wrote to some temp directory that I can recover the recording. As for how I set the destination event, yes I did it as described above.

If it is not where you thought you put it, and if you cannot find at least part of its name with a Spotlight search, you might consider a more manual search.
If the project is so valuable that you are willing to spend some time doing limited Spotlight searches, you could look for huge file sizes in your Mac that were created on that specific date. A one hour video file would likely be a couple of gigabytes in size, so it should stand out from other kinds of files made the same date. If these searches don't work either, you probably did not get a successful file save and are most likely out of luck.
