Q: Macbook Air Logic Board Failure

So here's my story: I bought a few months used Macbook Air Mid-2013 11" (A1465) last spring. It was big money for me, but I was hoping that atleast it would be a reliable tool for many years (basing on the Apple reliability reputation). Going almost a year without issues, last week happened this. I was studying late, and when I went to bed, the battery was almost empty (~5%). I just put it to sleep. When I woke up the next morning, the Macbook had ran out of power, and when I tried to charge it, it didn't do anything. I googled it, and tried many things, like SMC reset and warming the charger. I even tried a different charger, but nothing.

So I took the Air to a authorised Apple reseller (Valge Klaar) in Estonia for diagnostics. And yesterday I got a text from them that the logic board is dead, and the replacement would cost 480€ (570$). I mean, how is this even possible that a mother board just randombly dies? Especially on a great reputation company device...

I was stunned by these news. So here I am now, and because I can only dream about paying that sort of money right now (or in the near future), helpless and hoping for some kind of help from you guys. The laptop is over a year old, so the guarantee is over by a month or two. Should I just sell it for replacement parts? I must admit I am quite disappointed in Apple

This is not right by so called Apple standards. Logic board failure a day after warranty & mine would cost me more than the MBA to replace! Recall your products Apple!! Or fix them. But please deal with this issue appropriately and urgentl.

Another one to the list of casualties. I see that most of the complaints here are for 2014 model. Mine is an early 2014 model that I bought in August 2014. My system started misbehaving even before the one year warranty expired. It would sometime get stuck and restart multiple times on its own before bringing me to the home screen. I have reported the automatic restart multiple times and have also taken help of apple support guys to work it with me multiple times. For some reason there wasn't one particular thing causing the system to misbehave and it would start working on its own.

But as soon as the warranty period ended, my system crashed within a month and my local authorised service centre just rebooted my system to a previous OS X and it did start functioning but continued to restart automatically whenever it felt doing so. I have lost a lot of my work because the data couldn't be recovered properly. This March even the old OS crashed and the service store reinstalled OS X Yosemite and gave it back to me and warned me about possible Logic Board defect. After reading this thread, it fairly clear that even my computer Logic board is not performing properly and the engineer informed me that they will have to change it to resolve this issue. They will charge an unimaginable amount of Rs. 37000 for this.

This is completely ******** on Apple's part to not recall these laptops for replacing logic board. A well established company thrives on customer reviews/feedback and here apple is losing out a lot of its faithful customers.

My story - Recently my macbook air started giving issues with charging. I thought it could be the socket but when I took it to authorized service center, they told it's MLB failure which would cost me Rs 45,000 (approx $800) plus the new battery for $200. This is insane. Why would I repair my macbook for more than what a new one would cost.

Have the same issue with an early 2014 MBA, was just under a year old when we started having intermittent problems with it just powering off.  We didn't think much of it initially, but after 13-14 months it started to happen more frequently and now the machine has become unusable.  Took to Apple in UK and now facing a repair bill of £338 as a result.  This is very poor standard for a machine that was only used a maximum of 8 hours a week!  To make matters worse our consumer rights under EU legislation cannot be exercised as the MBA was purchased in the US (an impulsive unplanned visit to BestBuy).  Now considering scrapping the MBA as the repair cost is a significant percentage of a new machine (which we won't be buying now!) and given the posts mentioning failures of recently replaced logic boards.  Does Apple want it's iconic image being further tarnished by images of trash/bins filling up with scrap Macbook Air's?

I see you and others are also having problems with MacBook board problems.  Last month my MacBook Air started crashing on me every 30 min. to and hour.  Sometimes it was less.  So finally was able to take it to Mac service.  They said they'll take a look.  I waited and was told they'd have to keep it a bit and would call me. The following day I get a call and was told the board was shot and to replace it would be $400.00.  I said it's under warranty.  They would have to check that out.  They found it and said they'd have to call me back.  I haven't heard from them and it's been three days.  I bought the MacBook Air May 11, 2015. It was pre owned, I paid $749.99 for it and paid for a Simply Care CPU Service Agreement (NON-ADH) up to $1000.00 for 3 years.  Do you think their going to stall so I'll have to pay for the replacement of the board.  What to do?  I think I paid too much all around. Sounds like Apple should do the right thing and recall.  I notice Texas filed a class action lawsuit regarding this problem.

I own three macs--non of the work.  I was told by an employee that apple doesn't does not often reply to faulty merchandize, unless it gets very public, then they make a half hearted attempt to fix the problem until stop complaining.  this happened with the g-4 (maybe g-5) years ago.  Wait...I guess that makes it four makes I had that did not work.

You are absolutely right. I had the same problem with the same computer. One of us should try to start a discussion page and see how many people respond.

I don'y know how, but I'll help in anyway possible.  I simply cannot believe Apple's lack of concern overfits products and its customers.  For many of us, our computers are how we make our living.  Also, for many of us we don't make enough money to buy a computer every year.

I agree, we pay the extra costs for quality goods that will last.  If we

wanted cheap disposable computers that we had to buy every other year so,

we would buy PCs (the thought makes me cringe).  I wish they would at least

acknowledge that certain models have certain problems, but they don't.

Mid 2012 11in Macbook Air (8G Ram, 500G Drive) - random freezes requiring a hard shut down. Getting more frequent. Sometimes while running video (Safari content etc) other times doing very little. This unit doesn't qualify for the SSD recall, and as well I'm not covered by any Applecare ...so I'm hoping something is offered in a recall for these issues before my normally great machine becomes a paper-weight.

I just came back from applecare and should have checked this discussion before i went to the store. I have the same issue where i guess my laptop went to sleep at night and never switched on again. my MBA is a 2014, so just a year 7 months old, rarely used as its not my work laptop and like most here, i feel really disappointed with the response from apple and the thought of having to spend HKD 3.7K+. We pay such a premium for apple and this is the quality of the product and the service we're getting from Apple. real disappointment! If there is a way we can raise this to right level of attention within Apple, we should do this. given that this looks to be a common issue for many of us, Apple needs to look at the hardware and hopefully address this; if it means recall!

I'm looking at what we have in Hong Kong in terms of the consumer laws, but if not, happy to explore other options. we don't pay such premium so that we're required to buy a new laptop every year OR spend more than 50% of the purchase amount every year on repairs.
