Q: I just purchases magic trackpad.   Will it work with Yosemite OS X version 10.10.5

I purchased a Magic Trackpad on line at the Applie Store and it does not seem to be working correctly.   I have an IMAC with OS X Yosemite Version 10.10.5.    Should I return it.   Is there another mouse I can get that does not require so many batteries as the one I got with my computer.

The new keyboard, magic mouse 2 and magic trackpad 2 are El Capitan only.

What do you mean, "requires so many batteries etc".   The Magic Trackpad 2 only has one battery and that is charged by a cable.  Then you say "Is there another Mouse?"   Are you talking about Mice or Trackpads?

I'm just a little confused as to what you actually have.

I am sorry.   I was talking about the mouse that came with my iMac when I purchased it,   It requires two AA batteries.

I downloaded El Capitain but it won't install.

When did you buy it.    You can return it to them within 14 days of purchase.   You only need to advise them first, to ensure it falls within the 14 day period.

If the trackpad carried the legend Magic Trackpad 2, it is meant to work only with El Capitan.   If you have a newish iMac with 10.10.5 Yosemite, you should be able to upgrade to El Capitan.
