Q: move Aperture "book" to Photos

Hi all

I've been a hold-out with Aperture -- used to it and it works. However, I now have a problem: I've created a "book" in Aperture and would like to "buy" the book -- have Apple print it like they have in the past. However, now they won't do that from Aperture -- I have to do it in Photos.

But it's not clear to me how I move the book to Photos -- I've spent some time on this and don't want to lose the layouts, text, etc.

If I export the Aperture library to Photos, will the books move as well? Is there a special way to export a book from Aperture to make this work? Or am I stuck?

Thanks in advance!

If you do use Presto please post back with your observations on the resulting book so others can get an idea of what to expect in quality, etc.  Others who've we suggested Presto haven't reported back so we don't have any feedback on their books.

great - while I've known about and suggested PrestoPhoto for several years no one has yet posted their experience so I am in the dark about their quality and service - I am hoping that lack of complaints is an indication that people are not unhappy - the only comments at al have been in the Aperture forum and were IMHO trivial nitpicking issues like a $10.00 charge to remove the PrestoPhoto logo given that the Presto price is more that $10.00 less than Apple's and is far secondary to actual print, paper and binding quality which is what I am hoping for comments on

Please post back with your comments on the delivered product

I already have a copy of the book I am about to reorder from Presto, so I will be able to compare quality of the book.  Thanks for all the comments in this thread that got me going.

So I ordered a book from Presto Photo. This was a softcover 8.5 x 11 book, about 22 pages. About $30 all told which is a decent price.

Service was quick, and ordering was easy enough: I generated a PDF of my book from Aperture and uploaded that to Presto. One has to take care with cover and back pages -- uploading these separately is recommended. That's easy enough to do, and I've seen this caution with other services. Another point to bear in mind is that they show you, in their proof template, what your margins are for a hard- or soft-cover book for each page, including the covers: they tell you to stay within those margins to avoid cut-offs. I thought I did that.

The book was mailed in a cardboard mailer that was some scuffed on arrival, but the book itself was in good shape. I compared this book to a very similar one from last year ordered through Apple (same layout and size). The new book is a softcover so the spine is simply glued. That looked to be sturdy enough.

Unfortunately, there were problems: I think the paper is not as good as Apple's. The paper weight appears to be the same (or very close) but the finish has less gloss and more satin, so that the prints have less pop to them. Apparently if you order a hard-cover you get more paper choices, but I had only one choice for a soft-cover. I could live with this; it's not a deal-stopper.

A more serious issue is that despite the fact that my cover page text was supposedly inside the safe zone on the margin, it was cut-off on the order. I checked the font-size, which was the same as the previous book from Apple and in the same position on the cover. While Aperture says the fonts were the same, and the PDF of my new book showed that the text was safe, it printed larger -- several points larger -- in the production copy. That caused the cut-off. Not good.

I may try again and move the cover text. But it is not an auspicious start.

Have you contacted Customer service? That is always my first contact when there is a problem and often it totally resolves things

    Hi Steve!

Jumping in to see if I can help with your concerns. Since your order was placed, we revamped our software and now Aperture PDFs can be uploaded as one complete file, no cover separating required. It's true that the imagewrap covers generated with Aperture keep text crazy-close to the bottom. If you bring this to the attention of the customer service team after uploading, often we can take a look and see if there is a way to make a manual adjustment on just the cover if you are after a hardcover. if you order a dust jacket or softcover (as you did), it's almost always fine where it is.

On this note, your cover text most definitely does look like it is in the safe zone on your project so we'd really like to see the cover you received. When you get a chance, please do email us a photo at support@prestophoto.com so we can investigate!

I double-checked the paper types available for your project - I think you would be most pleased with our Lustre paper option. It is a heavier-weight option and we often hear the color really does pop compared to other paper types. It's our favorite, for sure. If you look under the "All Sizes" tab for your book, Lustre is an option. There are 26 products available for the project you ordered so we list the "most popular" options by default so it isn't too overwhelming, but you can really dial in the customization for the perfect option to suit your needs.

Please let me know if I missed anything or if you have any other questions. We look forward to assisting with your cover text concern ASAP and will stay tuned for a photo!!

    -Meghan

I am back from my travels and my order from PrestoPhoto was waiting for me.  I ordered the 11X8.5 imagewrap hardcover book on premium photo paper. The cost for the book was $60 + $4.99 sh.   This was a reorder of a book already printed in Aperture, so I had a solid comparison.  The apple book was about $80 +$5.99 sh, so there was a significant savings.  I am generally happy with the result, although I would like the option to order a paper cover.  The imagewrap cover is fine for this book, but will not work for all books.  The paper is not as heavy so the book is not as thick as the apple book.  The original book was 70 pages, and the one from PrestoPhoto was 72 because I turned the front and back flaps into front and back pages for the book.  I need 3 more copies of this book, so this is a good savings.  The book contains a combination of old scanned photos and new digital photos.  I cannot tell any difference in the scanned photos, some of which date back to the 1930's or so.  The cover photo is a scanned photo from 1952, and it looks better on the image wrap than the paper cover.   The newer digital photos pop just fine if they are taken outside, but the inside color does not seem to be as good.  The pictures are darker, and I did not reedit them for the new book.  I do not know if I would have noticed this if I had not had a side by side comparison, but if it happens again I will need to adjust my inside shots accordingly.

I had some difficulty uploading the PDF, but it was a lack of knowledge about manipulating PDF's that caused the problem.  I reached out for technical support but had figured it out by the time I got the response.   They also noticed that they had received my order, so knew I had figured it out.  I did manage to get the cover adjusted so the printing on it was not cut off.

I now need 3 more of these books, and I had to redo the PDF because there was a date error on one of the pages.  I am glad to see that I can send the PDF up as one file instead of sending the cover up separately.  Now I need to decide if I have to adjust those inside pictures before I order another.

I appreciate the response from Meghan above in regards to other options.  I have five other books in various stages of completion and I am glad to know that I will not have to export them and redo them in Pictures.  I will definitely try the lustre paper for some other books I have started.  I would appreciate any comments from anyone who has tried their velvet cover since the image wrap will not work as well for some of my other books I have in my pipeline.

I would also appreciate any comments on how the new apple photobooks in Pictures.  I know that I cannot create my own templates, but if they have sufficient templates it may work for me for some books.  I do like the ability to edit my photos as I create the books, and my understanding is that the editing function in Pictures is not currently  as robust as Aperture.

This thread has been so helpful to me and I would like to thank everyone who has taken the time to respond.  I was very discouraged when I found out that I could no longer print books in Aperture, and now I have some viable options I would not have discovered on my own.

Glad to hear you had a positive experience with Presto -- see my experience.

You can edit images in Photos -- I'm learning about the various extensions that are available, and I think that's the key to getting the same fine-grained control that we had in Aperture. In particular, the program 'Affinity' seems to offer extensions that are very useful -- I plan to purchase and try.

I am exploring the template issues in Photos. My Aperture templates were not demanding, and I want to see if Photos will let me do something that pleases me.

Thanks for your prompt response.  Is it possible to just upload one file to Photos to try it out?  I can create a separate aperture library for it.  I am interested in the extensions.   I liked aperture for its ease of use.  If the extensions integrate well then that will work for me too.

Not as robust but with this app from the App Store, External Editors For Photos,  one can use any 3rd party image editor within Photos (see Photos User Tip External Editors in Photos Are Here)
