Q: Aperture no longer functioning on El Capitan

Double click on Aperture, Opens in Adjustments showing previews of first part of library.  Any selection trying to switch to Library tab, minimize screen... results in colored spinning wheel and nothing happens.

Any ideas/solutions appreciated.

Thank you,

Have you updated to Aperture 3.6? That is the only version running on El Capitan.  it is working well for me.

Try to narrow down the problem.

    • If one of the photos in your library should be causing the problem, Aperture should be able to launch, if you hold down the shift key while launching Aperture. This will defer the generation of previews. Does that help?
    • Or the library may have a corruption.  Test with a different Aperture library. Hold down the options key while launching Aperture to bring up the library chooser. Create a new library. Can Aperture open a new library?

    Thank you Leonie.

This was helpful because it allowed me to get in and search for the photos I wanted to find.

However, after exiting from Aperture and then coming back and hour or so later and reopening, I received a message suggesting that I repair the DB.  I clicked "Repair" and it went through it's process then opened the database.

Now I'm back to where I've been for months waiting (each time I open Aperture) while the Colored Wheel spins and there is "Processing" and another spinning wheel to the right of the tool bar situated between the the previews and the larger selected picture.  In the past "processing" had continued for 20 or more minutes.  I haven't got to that point yet this time.

    Questions:

Is holding down the shift key solving anything permanently or just for the sessions when used?

Is there a way to search for and repair corrupted pictures and/or DB?

Steve, if  Aperture can launch with the Shift key held down, but after some time you still are prompted to repair your Aperture library, you have probably imported a photo or video that cannot be processed. Because the problem started about a month ago, the item you need to find and remove has been imported around that time.

Launching Aperture with the Shift key held down will prevent Aperture from trying to process the photos that do not yet have previews - just for that session.

    • From your test it is clear, that there is an item where Aperture starts to hang, as soon as it tries to create a preview for this image or video.

You could also try to export all videos and photos you imported directly before the problem started (export the original files, not the edited versions) and then delete all of them from the library.  test each item in preview before you reimport it.

Thank you once again Leonie.  More food for thought.
