Mac OS XIt needs whatever password you entered when the first encrypted backup was made. If you read through the thread you will see that for one user or another a different password resolved it. Hundreds of different passwords have been posted as the "solution."

Apr 13, 2016 3:36 AM in response to mabual2by Emile Swiegers,I won't buy an apple product ever again. I really don't see how it's ''impossible'' to recover your password to have access to your OWN information.
So when you have lost or forgotten your password, you won't be able to backup any phone ever again. Because it's just so **** impossible to reset the darn thing.
All my respect, gone.

If you encrypted your hard drive and forgot the password how would you recover your data? You wouldn't. The "password" is not really a password. It is an encryption key for a very strong encryption algorithm. It isn't stored anywhere, unless you took the precaution of saving it in a keychain or wallet app. But you had that option and didn't use it. So naturally you blame Apple for your oversight. That's so third millennium; never take responsibility for your own actions.
If Apple had a way to give you access to an encrypted backup that you made that method would work for everyone; the FBI, your local police, and any competent hacker. Apple went out of their way to assure that your backup is secure. And you are unhappy that they did this. By all means go get a phone that can be easily hacked; that way you will always be able to access data that you encrypted, even if you forget the password. But so will everyone else. Android phones fit that specification, at least for now. But Google is fixing that also.

Apr 14, 2016 8:07 AM in response to leabe18by MelodyPondRiverSong,Worked like a charm! I know I never set the backup password to be the same as my admin password but that's what it was.

Apr 16, 2016 7:32 PM in response to buckeye89by nabinshr,SOLVED: when it will ask for password in iTune:
1: Unplug iPhone without eject.
2: Plug again to iTune
3: now check the encrypt box & set the password.
4: Now use the back up
5: now use the new set up password.
DONE!

Apr 17, 2016 10:34 AM in response to Calvin Loby dave-a,Yes. 0000 worked for me, and no, I don't remember ever setting a password. Apparently this is a default if the "encrypt" button happens to be activated. And it's now 2016, and it still works! Thanks for the post!

Apr 17, 2016 5:18 PM in response to mabual2by tylorteam1,this is YOUR fault, not apples. you set the password. it's physically impossible for this to happen any other way.

Apr 22, 2016 3:39 PM in response to buckeye89by rmirza123,make sure you are not connected to wifi. I never remembered setting a password for the backup. But it worked when i used a very old password. try every password you can ever think of. youve set this password once before. maybe unknowingly but believe me its a password you know just try every single password you have ever used.

Apr 30, 2016 12:51 PM in response to buckeye89by jefforig,I did not read this whole post but tried a few things and finally got it to work for me. My situation is somewhat unique but hopefully will help someone.
I tried every password I could think of including 0000 and 1234 but nothing worked.
All I was trying to do was transfer my data from an old iphone 5s to a new iphone 6 plus.
I still had my original iphone 5s - this is key.
What I did that worked:
- Opened up iTunes
- Clicked on iTunes Preferences menu
- Clicked on Devices at the top
- Select the back up I wanted to delete
- Clicked Delete
- I deleted ALL of the backups (again because I had the original phone)
- I closed iTunes
- I emptied the trash
- I restarted the Mac
- I opened up iTunes
- Reconnected the original iPhone 5s and did an UNENCRYPTED backup (did not check Encrypt)
- Disconnected the original iPhone 5s
- Restarted the computer
- Then connected the new iPhone 6 plus when prompted to do transfer from iTunes
- Did the manual restore and Encrypt was NOT checked
This worked to get my photos and other things on to the iPhone 6 plus.
I had to manually install most of my apps that were not default installed on the iPhone 6 plus. I am not sure if all the computer restarts were necessary but that's what I did.
What went wrong for me in the beginning was making a backup of the iPhone 5s in preparation for transferring to the iPhone 6 plus AND checking Encrypt. I did not type in a password. Then I ran into all the problems everyone here has encountered.
Hopefully this helps.

May 2, 2016 4:23 AM in response to jefforigby cindernat,I read about 20 pages of this thread.
Here's what worked for me.
1. Have iPhone/iPad plugged in via USB
2. Open iTunes and go to the Summary page for your device
3. Unlock the lock screen of your iPhone
4. Try unticking the Encrypt Backup checkbox
5. What you have to enter next is the password for your Apple ID from when the backup was created (I needed the correct capitisation)
6. Hopefully this works for you!
Something to note: when my iPhone screen was locked, the above password did NOT work. When it wasn't locked, it worked. Bizarro.
Also, none of the following fixed the situation:
Remove and reattach device from USB
Restart device
Restart PC.

May 15, 2016 1:15 PM in response to buckeye89by 1385614,The same thing happened to me and it took me hours upon hours to finally find out how to get the backup restored. The only password that work was the original VPN password I had on the mobile device...weird but that's what it enabled me to retrieve my backup. Hope this would help anyone.

May 18, 2016 4:31 PM in response to buckeye89by Bec the Tech,Hi all
After backing up my phone to help a client with his issue, i.e. i put his backup on my iPhone, I fixed his issue. I then went to restore my backup to my iPhone, only to get a password required. I didnt have encrypted password ticked and no recollection of ever entering one. So I read this forum and tired all combinations 1234, 12345, 0000, asd, my phone pin, my apple ID etc .... i though that i lost all data.... thank goodness for cloud services.
any way today i checked my keychain, searched for backup and found an entry from 2013 with a password i would never have guessed, and it WORKED Phew, finally
I hope this info helps others at all
Cheers
