Q: All my notes have disappeared - iphone 6s

last night i was using my notes app, this morning i open it up, it crashes. then i open it up again, and all my notes are GONE. ive looked to see if they were linked to email or icloud, and they were not -- they were all local on my phone. i do have a backup but it is from a month ago. i have no idea how this happened, i did absolutely nothing between last night and opening the app this morning. any help would be appreciated thank you! (iphone 6s ios9.1)

Tap Settings > iCloud

Toggle Notes OFF then back ON.

Give iCloud a few minutes to re sync your Notes.

Cloud can perform backups automatically for you ..
After you've turned on iCloud Backup, iCloud can automatically back up your device each day. iCloud makes these daily automatic backups only if:

Your device is connected to a power source.
Your device is connected to a Wi-Fi network.
Your device's screen is locked.
You have enough available space in iCloud for the backup.
