Q: why is my iTunes play count incorrect since i started using apple music?

Apple music - generally like the for you function and i have listened to some great stuff.  BUT, i went on holiday to italy (no data service) to find i have virtually no songs on my phone. I have just been finding around with iTunes on my mac and phone. i wanted to ensure i had lots on there.

I have a couple of smart play lists, i checked the last played column  and  it's over a month out, according to my iTunes i haven't played any music at all since i joined apple music.

Therefore my smart playlists are not updating etc etc.

how can i correct this? i have turned off the could music function on my phone and uploaded all the music back on but the data is still wrong.

please help

    Hi wooliewoollard,

If I understand your question, you would like to know why your iTunes Library play counts don't show your activity using Apple Music.  Could you provide a little more information about how you are using the Apple Music subscription?  It sounds to me like you have been mainly streaming content to your device.  While you can indicate your favorites, which will update the For You suggestions, unless you download music to play offline, play music from your own music collection, the smart playlists and play counts won't be updated.

Take a look at the resource below to get a better understanding of how the Apple Music subscription and the Music app works:

Use Apple Music in the Music app

    Listen offline

You can download songs—including songs that you bought from the iTunes Store, added from Apple Music, or that were matched or uploaded with Apple Music or iTunes Match—to your device to listen to when you're not connected to the Internet:

    1. Tap the More Options icon  more options next to the item.
    2. Tap the download icon  to the right of the song's artwork at the top of the More Options menu, or tap Download from the bottom of the menu.
    3. The song downloads to your device.

To see music that you downloaded to listen to offline, go to My Music. Under the Recently Added section, tap the category selector (Artists, Albums, etc.). Only Downloaded Music is at the bottom of the category list. When this setting is on, My Music shows only songs that you downloaded to your device. Turn this setting off to see all of your music, including music stored in iCloud Music Library.

    Add songs, albums, and playlists

You can add songs, albums, playlists, and music videos to your library from anywhere in Apple Music. Items you add on one device are also added to your other devices that are signed in to Apple Music.

On your iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch

    1. In the Music app, find the song, album, or playlist that you want to add.
    2. Tap the More Options icon   to the right of the song or album name.
    3. Tap   to add the song, album, or playlist to My Music.

Songs and albums appear under My Music > Library. Playlists appear under My Music > Playlists.

    On your Mac or PC

    1. In iTunes, find the song, album, or playlist that you want to add in the New or For You tabs, or search within Apple Music. You can search Apple Music from any tab except the iTunes Store.
    2. Click the More Options icon   to the right of the song or album name.
    3. Click   Add to My Music.

Songs and albums appear under My Music. Playlists appear in the sidebar of the Playlists tab under Apple Music Playlists.

    Take care,
