For keeping photos, calendar events, contacts, notes, iCloud Mail etc. in sync with all of your Apple products. Your photos on your Mac match the photos on your iOS device. Your contacts app has the same entries on all your Apple products without having to enter them separately in each one.
You can have an iCloud drive that keeps document synced between your devices.
Some may call or consider this a backup, but it is not a true backup.
