Q: High RAM usage in new MacBook Air?

This is the first time i've owned a Mac, and it's currently a week old. I've been using it everyday since it arrived (watching videos, using word and researching). I recently found my way onto Activity Monitor, only to see that 7.5gb of the 8gb physical memory was in use - 3gb of this was from kernel_task. I quit all the open windows, so it's now at 1.11gb, but this still seems much too high. That said, I don't know anything about what it should be, so i'd like to know if this is normal? If not, what can I do to lower the kernel_task? (Also, the kernel_task is 25.42gb under the disk tab, should i be worried?)

Aside from that, nearly half the RAM is still in use and i'd like to know if that too is normal - for such a new mac.

The system hasn't been slowed down at all while I've been using it, but if there is a problem I'd like to know before it becomes an issue. If the problem is from the manufacturer and not how I've been using the mac, I'd ofc like to get in contact with Apple.

Specs: 8GB RAM, 256SSD, i5 Intel Core

OS X El Captain, version 10.11.4

Thanks!
