Q: Fingerprint Failed after iOS 9.3/9.3.1 update

Long story short: iPhone 6, I downloaded iOS 9.3/9.3.1 and fingerprint scanner stopped working the same day.  Apple refuses to recognize the iOS update could've discontinued my scanner.

I downloaded the iOS9.3 update about one week ago.  That day, and every day after, my phone would randomly shut off multiple times (forcing me to restart it).  Also, that same day of the iOS 9.3 update, the fingerprint scanner stopped working.  I take extremely good care of my phone so I figured this has to be an update issue.  I went into settings/privacy trying to set up the fingerprint scanning and it wouldn't let me put a new fingerprint in, and would jump right to a "Fingerprint Failed" screen.  A couple days later, I downloaded the iOS 9.3.1 update (hoping that it would fix my problem), and it did not.  In fact, the 9.3.1 update failed to fully download, and forced me to resort to reinstalling a backup.

I later went into the Apple Store, and they said that an update could never do that to my phone, and that my phone's display must be replaced.  Then, after insisting to ask another employee for a second opinion, she came back and said she talked to 3 different employees from the Genius Bar, and that the update wouldn't have discontinued my fingerprint scanner.  She then said I must purchase a new phone, and that they couldn't fix it.  If I hadn't been a loyal Apple customer, then I would've thought for sure they were trying to just get me to update to the next model.  Has anyone else encountered this problem?

No,  Updated to 9.3 the day it was released, no issues with touch id, same thing with 9.3.1 updated the day it was released and have no issues with my touch id.

So no an IOS update can't cause the malfunction of your touch id.

Respectfully, there have been the fingerprint failure issues in the past with iOS updates.  Possibly, your phone isn't affected. --> http://www.cnet.com/news/ios-9-1-update-wreaks-havoc-with-fingerprint-sensor-say -some-users/

Sorry your question was regarding ios 9.3.1 not ios 9.1 and you ask if anyone else has encountered this issue, thus I replied back letting you know there is no issue as I seem to be the only one responding to your thread.

if you feel its an issue take it to the apple store and have the folks at the genius bar take a look at it.

Yep, same for me. Upgraded to 9.3.1 and I no longer have touch id/fingerprint functionality.

Same issue with 9.3 on an iPhone 6. If I restart it will work again for a bit, then stop.

Nope. Apple NEVER says what they plan to do, and never do anything with any fanfare.

UPDATE Just talked to Apple Care. We made a DFU reset with iTunes. The problem is still there. In their opinion it must be an hw problem. IMO it's an os issue. I really hope 9.3.2 will be released soon and it will solve this. As I said before: apple care it's oustanding for kindness and patience but iOS it's getting worse year by year. my2cents

This has been the "party line" that has been reported often in these forums - one must then ask oneself " How can all these folks have the same HW problem immediately after installing an update?"

Cause and effect is always true in the scientific method. There is malicious code in the world that can make equipment go crazy = https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Stuxnet, for just one example - I saw an experimental attack on a power generator that shook it to pieces on a PBS show about cyber attacks = possible but not likely with an iPhone?

I have experienced frequent fingerprint ID failures, having nothing to do with updates. I just delete the previous fingerprint(s) and set up new fingerprints. I don't know why I have to do this every few weeks but I do.

Confirmed:  after upgrade 9.3.1, finger prints had been cleared.  Tried to set finger prints up failed. Restarted iphone did not fix issue.  Cause: iphone had been connected to laptop thru USB port. Once removed from USB port, finger print set up is working again.

Hi - I am facing the same problem. Since the time I have downloaded 9.3, my fingerprint scanner works intermittently ! The scanner fails to work for a few days and then come back alive again. Have tired everything but it just does not work. Hoping Apple comes with a fix soon..

I have seen reports of folks "shaking" their iPhone when the problem occurs and fixing the issue "temporarily"
