Do you have System Preferences -> Security -> FileVault enabled?  If so you will "ALWAYS" need to enter your password when you boot your Mac.  This is so that the system can access the encrypted disk.

Thanks so much Bob.  This is absolutely correct and solved my problem.  Just wondering, if I have firewall turned off so that I can automatically log in, are my files etc more vulnerable?  Should firewall be on for protection?  Do you keep it on?

Thanks so much for helping me.

FileVault is whole disk encryption.  As in your entire disk is encrypted, so that should your Mac is lost or stolen, no one by you can access your data.

The Firewall, ties to block unwanted connections requests.  Totally different things.  And if your iMac lives behind a home router, then the router is acting as a hardware firewall, so enabling the Mac Firewall would be redundant.
