Q: Macbook keeps ejecting external hard drives

My Macbook Retina 12' keeps ejecting external hard drives and external SSD or USB sticks without warning and without me interfering. A warning sign will pop up and say that I always should eject external drives safely before detaching them. But I didn't even touch them. This happens a lot, especially when a drive is connected with a USB-C to USB adapter (Apple adapter). Sometimes it happens every 5-10 minutes.

MacBook, iOS 9.3.1

If it is only when this adapter is connected, then the adapter is likely faulty or not getting enough power for the USB devices.  Many USB devices are not energy saver aware, and need power from an external source such as the wall or a wall powered hub.  And after the lid is closed or the Mac goes into Energy Saver, the ports can remain in low power mode until a reboot.
