You need to use a special DVD player designed to work with computers and Macs.
Like Apple's DVD player that is designed to work with Macs that no longer have a built-in CD/DVD optical drive.

I think the user is trying to use a standard, retail dvd player box that you use with your TV.
The user mentions trying to use an HDMI cable with the Mac.
Regular retail electronic store CD/DVD players that are designed to work with a TV only won't work any computer.
