Q: Why is my iPhone not recognized when plugged into iTunes?

Hello all,

I am trying to sync music from my windows 10 PC onto my iPhone 6 plus and for some reason the computer is not recognizing the phone. What would cause that?

Thank you,

iPhone 6 Plus, iOS 9.3.1

    Hello,

Thank you for responding. Unfortunately, it did not work. I guess I should correct myself. When plugged in, the phone is recognized but a pop up, that shows "internal storage" appears. It is a separate screen from iTunes. The phone does not appear anywhere on the iTunes page. I tried to screen shot what I am talking about but I am unable to post it.

To post a screenshot click on the small camera icon in the middle of the posting window. A screenshot would help explain the issue. Also the more details you provide the better as it is difficult to understand what it is.

I looked for the driver for Apple and it is not on my computer. The PC is about 2 months old and is running Windows 10. How would I add the driver?

Again, thank you for your help.

The driver should be added automatically when you connect the phone to your computer. A device setup should have appeared on the taskbar the first time the phone was connected. Not sure what driver you looked up or how.

On W10, connect your phone to the computer by USB, go to the Control Panel > Device Manager > Universal Serial Bus controllers > under it you should see Apple Mobile Device USB Driver. If so delete it, disconnect the phone, reboot the computer, reconnect the phone and a new driver should install.

I went to device manager, USB Controllers and the Apple Mobile Device USB Driver is not listed at all. There is two USB Composite Device listings but nothing for Apple and my phone is connected.

So the phone is not recognized by W10. Do you have McAfee AV by any chance?

I do run McAfee. I did find the device under Portable Devices. Should I delete it from there?

First try going to Control Panel > Devices and Printers > you should see Apple iPhone under Unspecified. If so select it > properties > hardware > properties > driver. Can you update the driver there?

McAfee is well know for interfering with iTunes on Windows computers. On my previous computer, W7, I had to remove McAfee and run Windows Security Essentials instead. On my current computer, W10, I run Windows Defender.

Try this as a test. Disable McAfee temporarily (both the AV and firewall) and then reboot the computer but be aware that after rebooting McAfee usually auto starts again. In order to prevent this you have to disable McAfee by telling it not restart upon reboot (I don't recall the steps I took last year). After you reboot, make sure that McAfee is not running (you should get a warning from Windows about not running a firewall or antivirus). Then connect your phone and see if a phone driver auto installs.

On my post above, first item:

Control Panel, Devices and Printers, Apple iPhone > right click and then Properties > Hardware > Properties > Change Settings (this is a change from above) > then click on Driver > Driver Update.

    Hello,

Sorry for taking so to get back to you.

I tried each of the steps and after clicking on update driver, I was told the driver was up to date. I restarted the computer, shut down my firewall and plugged in the phone. The phone is still not recognized by iTunes.

The steps in this article are a bit different than what I suggested before (at the very end, steps 9 and 10). Maybe they will help.

If they don't you could uninstall iTunes from your computer, reboot it, and install it again. A bit drastic but some users have reported success by doing so.

Also you could post in the iTunes for Windows Forum iTunes for Windows

There is a very knowledgeable user by the screen name of turingtest2 (tt2). He is an expert in iTunes and may suggest other options.
