Q: How to add Photos pictures to iMovie or iDVD

I have a late 2009 iMac with El Capitan version 10.11.3.

I cannot move pictures from Photos to iMovie or iDVD.   Help says use iPhotos which does not contain the photos I want to move.  Help also says cannot move pictures between iPhotos and Photos.

Which version of iMovie do you have? iMovie 10 is showing your Photos Library in the Project Media pane. You can directly add the photos and videos to your movie project from this pane.

iDVD will probably never been updated to be able to see the Photos Library. Use the File menu  "File > Import > Image" to import photos from a folder.

In the target application use the media browser (in the source pane on the left of the open window toward the bottom under media ==> photos ==> Photos) or in Photos export the unmodified original to a desktop folder and use from there

iDVD is too old, Larry.  The Media Browser does not yet show Photos for Mac Libraries, neither from the Media browser panel nor from the File > Import panel in the Media section. It does just show the iPhoto, Aperture, and PhotoBooth libraries, the same problem as with other older applications:

The iDVD Media Browser, as seen on my Macs with El Capitan.

iMovie 10.1.1  is showing the Photos Library just fine in the "My Media" tab, and iMovie 9.0.9 does not work well in El Capitan anyway.

In iDVD I can only import from Photo Booth.  I assume I need to get the latest versions of iMovie and iDVD.

Do you think that would help?

The latest iDVD version is iDVD 7.1.2 from 2011,  the version I just tested.  Apple stopped the development many years ago. You can download that last update here:  https://support.apple.com/kb/DL1414?viewlocale=en_US&locale=en_US

The current iMovie version is iMovie 10.1.1, and is working well with Photos for Mac. It is very different from the previous version, test it, before you uninstall your current version.

Thanks to all.  I will try your suggestions.  I looked at the latest iMovie app and there are some serious problems listed in the comments.  However for $14.95 I guess it is worth the risk.

Why is there no iDVD on my new Mac? How do I get it and how do I install it?

    https://discussions.apple.com/docs/DOC-3673

To burn a DVD with iDVD from the latest version of iMovie, you have to export the movie using the Export button and select 480p as the size. Open iDVD and start a new project, then drag that exported movie file into the iDVD menu window, avoiding any drop zones you see.

If you are using El Capitan see this thread:

If you have created a slideshow in PHotos and want to add it to an iDVD project do the following:

Export the slideshow out of Photos as a QT movie file via the Export button in the upper right hand corner of the toolbar. Select 480p as the format.

Open iDVD, select a theme and drag the exported QT movie file into the open iDVD window being careful to avoid any drop zones.

Follow this workflow to help assure the best quality video DVD:

Once you have the project as you want it save it as a disk image via the File ➙ Save as Disk Image  menu option. This will separate the encoding process from the burn process.

To check the encoding mount the disk image, launch DVD Player and play it.  If it plays OK with DVD Player the encoding is good.

Then burn to disk with Disk Utility or Toast at the slowest speed available (2x-4x) to assure the best burn quality.  Always use top quality media:  Verbatim, Maxell or Taiyo Yuden DVD-R are the most recommended in these forums.

If iDVD was not preinstalled on your Mac you'll have to obtain it by purchasing a copy of the iLife 09 disk from a 3rd party retailer like Amazon.com: ilife 09: Software or eBay.com.  Why, because iDVD (and iWeb) was discontinued by Apple over a year ago.

Why iLife 09 instead of 11?

If you have to purchase an iLife disc in order to obtain the iDVD application remember that the iLife 11 disc only provides  themes from iDVD 5-7.  The Software Update no longer installs the earlier themes when starting from the iLIfe 11 disk nor do any of the iDVD 7 updaters available from the Apple Downloads website contain them.

Currently the only sure fire way to get all themes is to start with the iLife 09 disc:

    Installer001.jpg

This shows the iDVD contents in the iLife 09 disc via Pacifist:

    Pacifist001.jpg

You then can upgrade from iDVD 7.0.3 first to iDVD 7.0. and then to iDVD 7.1.2 to iDVD 7.1.2 via this updater: iDVD 7.1.2

If you want to create a slideshow in iDVD from still photos from your Photos library you will have to export the photos to a folder on your hard drive and then drag them from the folder into the iDVD slideshow window.  Or you can drag the folder into the Media/Photos window so you can access the photos from within iDVD:

    iWiDVDmediaphotos.jpg

Follow this workflow to help assure the best qualty video DVD:

Once you have the project as you want it save it as a disk image via the File ➙ Save as Disk Image  menu option. This will separate the encoding process from the burn process.

To check the encoding mount the disk image, launch DVD Player and play it.  If it plays OK with DVD Player the encoding is good.

Then burn to disk with Disk Utility or Toast at the slowest speed available (2x-4x) to assure the best burn quality.  Always use top quality media:  Verbatim, Maxell or Taiyo Yuden DVD-R are the most recommended in these forums.

Yours is the best info yet!  I have been able to move a photo album to iMovie.  I have decided to make a movie instead of a DVD.  Haven't used a recent version of iMovie, so a learning experience.  So far I like it better than the previous version.

Thanks very much for you time.

If you have the latest iMovie, V 10.1.1, you'll be able to access photos in your PHotos library like this:

I have been able to load photos to iMovie and have a project that I can see in the app.   Now I learn that I cannot burn a DVD to share to play on my DVD player or share with a friend.

    Very disappointing.

Do you still have iDVD installed? Then share the finished video from iMovie to a file and import that file to iDVD.
