Q: Finder crashes/freezes when I'm online

Over the past week, my Finder has been acting very funny.  It frequently crashes and freezes after several minutes from switching over to other windows, or switching from icon view to list view, etc.  At first I thought that icon view was more "stable", but not 100% sure.  Also seems like when I'm offline the crashes don't happen as much or at all.  Tried to dump preferences already (finder pref and sidebar pref), to no avail.

Screen Shot 2016-03-14 at 3.53.23 PM.jpg

I've posted the console logs here.  OS X version 10.9.5 (upgraded last week from 10.9.4, so that might have something to do with this?), 2.6 GHz Intel Core i5, 16 GB 1600 MHz DDR3 RAM.  Macbook Pro 2013.  Please help - thanks.

    Try a restart.

Do a backup, using either Time Machine or a cloning program, to ensure files/data can be recovered. Two backups are better than one.

Try setting up another admin user account to see if the same problem continues. If Back-to-My Mac is selected in System Preferences, the Guest account will not work. The intent is to see if it is specific to one account or a system wide problem. This account can be deleted later.

Isolating an issue by using another user account

If the problem is still there, try booting into the Safe Mode using your normal account.  Disconnect all peripherals except those needed for the test. Shut down the computer and then power it back up after waiting 10 seconds. Immediately after hearing the startup chime, hold down the shift key and continue to hold it until the gray Apple icon and a progress bar appear. The boot up is significantly slower than normal. This will reset some caches, forces a directory check, and disables all startup and login items, among other things. When you reboot normally, the initial reboot may be slower than normal. If the system operates normally, there may be 3rd party applications which are causing a problem. Try deleting/disabling the third party applications after a restart by using the application un-installer. For each disable/delete, you will need to restart if you don't do them all at once.

    Hi,

this is happening to me, too. I did not solve the issue yet, but what helped me to try to figure out where the problem is generating is:

    a) Killing the Finder app

    b) Opening a Terminal window

    c) Running a new fresh Finder from the Terminal: /System/Library/CoreServices/Finder.app/Contents/MacOS/Finder

I suspect that GoogleDrive is causing some issues, so I uninstalled it, however I still have following traces:

2016-03-31 22:43:09.659 Finder[3904:507] -[OverlayCache isPathInGdrive:]: unrecognized selector sent to instance 0x7fd63d7d71d0

    2016-03-31 22:43:38.149 Finder[3904:507] +[CATransaction synchronize] called within transaction

    2016-03-31 22:45:16.073 Finder[3904:507] +[CATransaction synchronize] called within transaction

I will reboot now and test again. Please let me know about your issues and how you are trying to solve it as well.

    Regards,

    P4.

Was happening to me too since yesterday. Immediately verifying backups, etc. Really strange Finder freeze, with just no screen updates in the file pane (folder and favorites pane seems ok). Came upon this topic. Thanks so much, it was indeed solved when disabling the network. Everything worked again. Then enabled network again and disabled Google Drive as suggested above, that did the trick also. Seems Google Drive is having issues.

    I had the same issue.

There is an update for Google Drive (version 1.29). Which version do you guys use?

EDIT: I still have the issue even with the update.

It was a good reason for me to upgrade to El Capitan (10.11.4 to be precise). Was still running Mavericks earlier. Problem gone now. Seems to be Mavericks-related.

    Hi guys!

...I suffer from the finder freeze problem, and follow almost all the sugestions from this, and ohter post. To date I can confirm that the freeze issue — in my case — was related to mavericks <> google drive app. When deleted the GDrive app, and rebbot, the problem was gone.

    Thanks for the info...

    Hi,

I have the same problem today.

I found this solution that works for me :

    1. Change Google Drive settings to 'Show sync file status items and right click menu' (in Advanced tab)
    2. Restart the Finder

    Hope it will help...

This bug in Google drive referenced in many other threads last few days ...

Certainly affects Mavericks 10.9 and maybe 10.8 (but I can't verify that) ... apparently not reported in later OS X versions.

Bug is present in latest version of Google Drive 1.31.xxx not clear when this was released - see below for info in this problem from a few years ago.
