Q: Family sharing and members itunes balances?

Me and my wife just updated to iOS 8 and enabled family sharing with me as the organizer.

My wife had a concern, though. She has like $10+ sitting in her itunes balance and wants to make sure that she can use it. Since it was a gift to her, we don't want my purchases to affect the balance. And I want her purchases to come out of that balance before hitting my bank account. At the rate she purchases things, it could take years before it is used up. This is the reason why we did not wait to activate family sharing.

Any confirmation on how this situation would play out?

iPhone 5, iOS 8

    Hey Jeriokelive,

Thanks for the question. If a family memeber has store credit in their account, that credit will be used before the organizer's payment information:

    Making purchases

After you set up your family, any time a family member initiates a new purchase it will be billed directly to your account unless that family member has gift or store credit. First, their store credit will be used to pay the partial or total bill. The remainder will bill to the family organizer. As the family organizer, any receipts generated by the transaction will be sent to you. Learn more about how iTunes Store purchases are billed.

HI Matt, When the family organiser's account is billed, will it take from the account balance or bill the card directly. I would like it them amount to come off the balance before charging my card.

    Thanks,

    Mike

Any balance on the family organiser's account can't be used whilst they remain as a family organiser - if the organiser buys something his/her card will be charged ; if a family member buys something the member's balance will be used (if they have one), otherwise the organiser's card will be charged (if the member's balance doesn't cover the price the excess will be charged to the organiser's card).

Thank for the info. That's an annoying feature and a reason to not use it.
