Q: keep stoplight from searching mail messages

Stoplight just won't stop searching for mail messages, despite the fact I've set preferences to NOT search mail when I try to find something on my Mac. What's up with that?

MacbookPro, mid2010,

using el Capitan (but actually this has been a problem in previous versions as well and I'm just fed up with it again)

MacBook Pro (13-inch Mid 2010), OS X Mavericks (10.9.5)

If you have unchecked Mail & Messages in the Search Results for System Preferences : Spotlight panel, then it is possible that you are getting hits off of the previous Spotlight cache/database.

I would click on the Privacy tab. and then drag/drop the boot drive (e.g. Macintosh HD) icon from the Desktop onto the Privacy panel, wait ten seconds, select it, and then click the minus button at the bottom to remove it from the panel. This will cause Spotlight to rebuild its database — without Mail & Messages.
