Apr 18, 2016 2:24 PM in response to Sparkleberryby jaws51,No, I'm sorry. I did not make myself clear. I have all the folders now on my desktop and they will not let me delete them or move them back to the hard drive. Most look like a white sheet of paper with the upper right corner turned down. Three are black squares with green writing in the upper left corner.

Apr 18, 2016 2:51 PM in response to jaws51by Rysz,I'm just guessing here, but these could be custom icons that migrated from your PC.
Select one of these icons then Get Info on it (Command+I). Click on the icon on the top of the window that appears. Select (highlight ) it, then Edit > Cut. This should revert the custom icon to a generic one.

Apr 18, 2016 2:54 PM in response to jaws51by dialabrain,Thank you but, I meant a screen shot of your entire screen, Command+Shift+3. You may have to reduce it's size in order to post it.

Apr 18, 2016 3:15 PM in response to jaws51by Kurt Lang,The most interesting part is how you managed to get all of these same named items on the desktop. It shouldn't even be possible.
Highlight any one of them (such as one of the many duplicates named Alert.gif). Then press Command+I. Take a screen shot of the Get Info box and paste it here. To get just the Get Info box, press Command+Shift+4, and then the space bar. The icon will turn into a camera. Move it over the Get Info box and click.

@jaws51, what were you doing when all those gifs showed up on your desktop?

Apr 18, 2016 3:24 PM in response to dialabrainby jaws51,I was trying to move them to the Trash. I got a message that it could not be deleted and they showed up on my desktop. I tried to move them back to the hard drive, but they won't move!

Apr 18, 2016 3:27 PM in response to dialabrainby Kurt Lang,Oh, I think I get it. Someone is either playing a funny on us, or friends are playing a trick on jaws51.
The only possibility is that what's on the desktop is an image that has been created in Photoshop or some other image editor so the same item could be duplicated over and over, and then made to be the desktop picture. So it's impossible to grab them since they aren't actual items.
As Sparkleberry noted, open the System Preferences and choose any other picture to use for the desktop. Watch the majority of what you show disappear.
