Q: iPod will not sync/stay connected to my PC

My Classic 160GB iPod will not stay connected to my computer. It connects and disconnects almost instantly on its own. iTunes does register it as a device (maybe because it's literally connected for 1-2 seconds before ejecting itself), my Computer shows no connected USB device, and obviously my iPod will not sync. I've run diagnostics on iTunes to test the iPod connectivity and that test always fails, stating there is no iPod found. I've also restarted my computer to make sure it is updated fully. And I have the latest version of iTunes. Is there anything I can do? Or is this some kind of problem with the iPod's hard drive and I just need a new one?

It could be a hardware problem on the iPod, but it could also be something else.  Does the iPod still operate properly (play songs) when disconnected?

To rule out a faulty USB docking cable that is not making reliable contact, try a different cable (if you have one).

As at test, shut down (power off) the computer and disconnect all USB devices.  You can leave standard USB keyboard/mouse connected, if used.  If your computer is a laptop, connect its power adapter so that it's not running on battery power.  Do this to Reset (restart) the iPod

Start up computer, run iTunes, and connect iPod to a direct USB port on the computer, by itself.  Is there any difference?
