Q: Safari constantly crashing

HI,

im on Mbp Late 2011

osx 10.11.4

16gb ram

i wont go into all the problems I've been having so I'll keep it short -

EVerytime I click safari, it opens for a few seconds then quits. After doing it about 4 times I get the spinning wheel and the system starts to freeze up.

HOw am I meant to get around this?

iI've managed to get it open long enough to turn off automatic safari suggestions but still the same.

ive reset the pram and smc (when I did this I couldn't get my OS back so had to fresh reinstall El Capitan - still the same problem.

I Can't even get safari open long enough to put google chrome on (although I've seen people say google chrome still crashes)

any ideas anyone?

thanks

What happens when you try a safe boot?

    HI,

WHen I load in safe mode, just after I put my password in, the screen flickers on and off for a few seconds, kind of like it's breaking up. Then the desktop screen comes on.

ALso, once in, if I run my mouse cursor across the dock, it's all 'wobbly' and jerky. Opening apps is the same, jerky. The whole laptop overall is very sluggish.

IN activity monitor - under 'memory' - 'kernel task' is at the top saying 693mb. The next one is iconserviceagent at 90mb.

UNder cpu is seems fine. Nothing high there at all.

IM having real problems here. Its like as soon as I use safari, it hangs and then the spinning wheel comes up and I need to restart.

    THanks

There is limited graphics performance in safe mode because it loads only the bare minimum required for the operating system which also involves disabling accelerated graphics.  Limited graphics performance in OS X recovery or safe mode - Apple Support  This is most likely what you were experiencing.

Safe mode is used to isolate an issue.  The question; did Safari crash or did Safari not crash while the computer is booted to safe mode?

Safari itself can be launched safely without booting the computer into safe mode.  Hold down the Shift key while clicking the Safari icon on the dock.  This will launch Safari without previous session data or extensions.  If Safari, under a normal boot, while launched in safe mode does not crash and continues to crash while launching normally then your issue is most likely related to a bad extension.

    Safari -> Preferences -> Extensions

If you want to fix an issue you first need to isolate it otherwise you are running around like a headless chicken.

AH ok thanks for the info, didn't know that about safe mode.

WEll, safari isn't crashing in safe mode. The weird thing Is is that I don't have any extensions enabled.
