Apr 19, 2016 12:08 PM in response to MJTKby theratter,For that old a model it would be Snow Leopard. However, you may find that isn't usable on many websites because the version of Safari is too old. First, you need to add more RAM - a minimum of 4 GBs. I would suggest the maximum allowed.
Maximum Memory 8.0 GB (Actual) 4.0 GB (Apple) Memory Slots 2 - 204-pin PC3-8500 (1066 MHz) DDR3 SO-DIMM Maybe trade the HD for an SSD or add the SSD, get rid of the optical drive and keep the HD using an OWC Data Doubler if there is one for your model.
As for OS X you can upgrade to El Capitan at the App Store.

Apr 20, 2016 5:40 AM in response to MJTKby Limnos,I have a late 2008 MacBook.
My first comment is you have far too little RAM. I use Mavericks and when I got this computer used a few months ago it was slow because it only had 2 GB RAM and Mavericks uses 1.98 GB just to run with nothing else. I suspect Yosemite is the same or worse. Upgrade to at least 4 GB RAM, maybe more if you do things like video processing. I have 8GB but even with video processing I don't get near to using it all.
The other slow thing could be your drive. If you are using the original drive it only spins at 5400 rpm. A SSD drive would be fastest but they can be a bit pricey, particularly if you want a large capacity drive. I went with a HDD (standard) drive because I wanted large capacity (1 TB). I bought a HGST 7200 rpm drive and the computer seems reasonably fast to me.
Check the OWC MacSales.com web site for upgrade possibilities. If buying more RAM make sure you get good quality and I can recommend going with either OWC or Crucial.
