Have a look at this article http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/QuickTime- why don't you try and see if it works without QT Pro, then you won't be out any money unneccesarily. I

No. The regular QT player can play .mov files.
Which QT version do you currently have?
Check your QT preferences to make sure the .mov & streaming settings enabled.
Quicktime>Quicktime Player Preferences>Advanced
Click on the MIME Settings button.
In the next window that opens up make sure that Streaming-Streaming movies is enabled (checked).
While you’re at it make sure the next 4 boxes are enabled also.
Click the OK button.
Now click Streaming
Your settings you should be (as starters):
Streaming Speed: Automatic
Make sure Enable Instant-On is enabled (checked).
Now click on Browser
Play movies automatically
Save movies in disk cache
Are both enabled.
Movie download Cache Size: Slider set all the way to the left.
If still having problems playing .mov files then I suggest that you also cross-post in the QuickTime for Mac OS Forums where the QuickTime experts hang out.
