Q: Can I make the router use an older WLAN protocol (WEP) with Lion?
A Collegue to which I am to help got a new Router, which wwas pre-configured by the provider.
The Lions (Montain-Lions) on MacBook Air can connect to Internet easily across of my iOS 9 mobil (personnal hot-spot).
My iOS 9 devices connected immediately. Though older OSX (Lion? ML?, I do not know for sure at the moment) does not.
They see the net in airport and can fill in the PW and the ’antennas’ in the menu is showing good connection, though Mail and Safari (the only available applications) are reporting: no connection to Internet.
Maybe the the kind of connection is newer than the older systems can do per se.

That will not change anything, except make your network less secure. The encryption method does not affect the rest of the internet connections, and you indicate that you are connecting to the WiFi.
You might want to check if you have a valid DNS address
System Preferences -> Network -> Advanced -> DNS
You can test your own DNS addresses by clicking on the [+] and adding something like
208.67.222.222
208.67.220.220
Google DNS
8.8.8.8
8.8.4.4
You could try running "Network Diagnostics"
Finder -> Go -> Go to Folder -> /System/Library/CoreServices
This should open a folder
Double Click on -> Network Diagnostics
follow the instructions.
