I have been trying to chat with an associate for the past two days because I thought it would be easier, that speaking directly to an associate. The problem is, When I request to do so on the website, it asks me about my serial number to continue with a question. I cannot access the serial number in my settings because my iphone 6 will not allow me to. It's terribly frustrating! The Apple store is a pretty good drive, so that will be my last resort.
You pretty much answered your own question that you title in your thread.
if you can't get to your serial number then you can't chat.. maybe look for the box that your phone came in.
otherwise it off to the Apple store you go.

Apr 20, 2016 9:19 AM in response to nervewreckingby Phil0124,You need a serial number or IMEI so Support can pull up the info on your device.
You can get the serial number and IMEI from the box the iPhone came in, or iTunes if you've ever backed up to it.
The IMEI can also be found printed on the back of the iPhone itself.
Find the serial number or IMEI on your iPhone, iPad or iPod touch - Apple Support
If you need support but you can't get to the Settings menu, you can use the IMEI/MEID instead of the serial number:
You will not be able to chat with a Support person without a serial number or IMEI.
