You're better of scrapping that and using the Photos feature. When you plug it in, Photos should upload and allow you to choose what photos you want to import. You can also select them to be deleted from your phone. If you turn on Photo Sharing, as long as you have a device with the photos on their originally you can still access them on your iPhone without taking up the storage.

You don’t add any pictures to iTunes.

You sync them from iPhone to computer and then choose what you want to sync back to the iPhone.
