Mac OS XHopefully, the iPod's songs are stored in your iTunes library on the computer (not just on the iPod).
Try doing a Reset (restart) on the iPod, as described in this document
Learn how to reset your iPod - Apple Support (see section iPod with a click wheel)
keeps resting by it's self.
If it keeps doing that after you manually do a Reset, there is probably a hardware problem, such as a faulty hard drive. If something else happens, like a error screen, please post back with more details.
battery doesnt last an hour or two
That's a separate problem. The battery is probably worn out and not able to hold a good charge. You can replace the battery.
If the iPod has a bad hard drive, but it is in otherwise good condition, you can consider replacing the hard drive with commonly available (and affordable) compact flash or SD card, on an adapter. How you do this depends on the specific iPod model. This web page lists all iPod models

If you an identify the iPod model or describe it in more detail, such as by storage capacity and Model # on the back, I can provide more info.
