Q: Help - migrating files

I need to migrate files from an old iMac to a new one and I don't want to transfer the old system folder to the new iMac. But I would like to transfer all the applications so that I don't have to reinstall everything. If I transfer the applications folder from the old Mac will the appropriate files needed in the system folder transfer also?

Move your content to a new Mac - Apple Support
You may find some apps that will need to be reinstalled, Office usually doesn't migrate well for one.

Just to add to what Mike said, you didn't specify how old the old Mac is or which version of OSX, but you may find certain apps do not run correctly and need updated or may not have an El Capitan compatible version at al.
