Apr 20, 2016 9:09 PM in response to blaze831by Kenichi Watanabe,Are you saying it won't sync because iTunes does not recognize the iPod when you connect it? Or are you saying the iPod does appear in iTunes, but it does not sync songs when you connect it (or when you click the Sync button)?
When you connect it, watch the iPod's screen. Does it initially says "Connected" or "Do not disconnect" or give other indication of connecting to the Mac? Or does it only show the battery charging symbol? Or does it not react at all to being connected?

Apr 21, 2016 4:54 AM in response to Kenichi Watanabeby blaze831,Hi. When I plug it into the mac, I get an error message, "your iPod (name) gave an incorrect response." It gives the name of the iPod, so it seems that iTunes sees the iPod. It does charge the battery, but the iPod screen shows no indication of connecting to the mac. Thanks!

Apr 21, 2016 5:00 AM in response to blaze831by Kenichi Watanabe,As a test, shut down (power off) the Mac and disconnect all USB devices. If you use standard USB keyboard/mouse, you can leave those connected. If it's a MacBook, connect its power adapter, so that it's not running on battery power. Do this to Reset (restart) the iPod

Start up the Mac, run iTunes, and connect the iPod to a direct USB port on the Mac, by itself. Is there any difference, regarding the error message?

Apr 21, 2016 6:03 AM in response to blaze831by Kenichi Watanabe,Since you just upgraded to El Capitan, IF you installed the upgrade over an existing OS X system, you may have a third-party system extension (previously) installed that is not compatible. Or you may have third-party processes that start up automatically when you log in. These are often drivers or software for third-party devices/accessories, and they could interfere with the iPod being properly recognized. To check this possibility, start up the Mac in Safe Mode.
Try safe mode if your Mac doesn't finish starting up - Apple Support
The Mac starts up without loading any third-party system extensions or auto-running third-party software. Run iTunes and connect the iPod, to see if there is any difference. The iPod should still appear in iTunes, in Safe Mode.
Another separate thing to try (you can do this while started up normally), is to put the iPod into Disk Mode.
Putting iPod into Disk Mode - Apple Support
Run iTunes and connect the iPod. If iTunes picks up the iPod (normally), it may prompt you to do a Restore. The Restore erases the iPod, reinstalls its software, and sets it to default settings. If you've OK with erasing the iPod, because you can re-sync it from your iTunes library, do the Restore. Getting to this point (without that error message coming up) probably means the problem will be resolved after the Restore.

Apr 21, 2016 5:01 PM in response to Kenichi Watanabeby blaze831,Hi Kenichi,
I tried safe mode and that didn't work. I couldn't try the second idea, putting the iPod into disk mode, as the link describing that says it doesn't apply to iPod touch. I'm hesitant to wipe the iPod clean, since at least right now I can use it (although I won't be able to update it). Thanks again for the help!

Apr 21, 2016 5:44 PM in response to blaze831by Kenichi Watanabe,Oh... you posted in the iPod classic area of the forum (and it says "iPod classic" in your profile info), so I thought you had an iPod classic. With an iPod touch (which is an iOS device like iPhone and iPad), the previously linked "How to Reset" document for iPod is not relevant. Be sure to do a Restart on your iPod touch, as described here (and then try connecting again)

Also, Apple has this document for various error messages when connecting iOS devices. If the error message actually said "invalid response" (and not "incorrect response"), there's an entry in that document for that error to Check your USB connections.

FYI - The forum category for iPod touch is here
We can continue this discussion, but you may want to also post a "fresh" topic question there. I own an iPod touch and iPhone, but I'm not as familiar with troubleshooting on iOS devices, compared to the "old school" iPods...
