Q: Unable to edit photos with new 9.3.1 update on iPhone

Since the new update 9.3.1, I receive an error message when trying to edit photos on my iPhone.  Is there a fix for this problem?

I am using an iPhone 5s and having trouble with the default photos app preinstalled by apple.

Also, I cannot attach a photo from the app to send via text or email.  Help!

Try resetting the Photos App. Close Photos completely from the app switcher window by double clicking the Home button and swiping up the Photos preview pane until it disappears from the screen. Then do a forced restart. Hold down the Home and Wake/Sleep buttons at the same time for about 15-20 seconds until the Apple logo appears.

Does this happen with all photos? Try taking a new photo to test if you can edit it. If you are not able to edit it the system could be corrupted and you may have to do a restore. First backup your device using iTunes. Then import your photos to your computer and copy all important data. Try restoring from backup first and testing it. If it does not help, you may have to restore as New and reconfigure from scratch as the backup could be corrupted. For this reason it is important to have your photos and data saved separately from the backup.

It is with all photos.  Everything worked perfect until I updated to 9.3.1.  I don't have a recent backup prior to the update.  Suggestions?

You can try backing up now and doing a restore from that backup. Keep in mind that corruption is just a possibility only. If there is corruption and it is in the system (not in data or an app) doing a restore will install a fresh copy of the iOS.

Did you try taking a new photo and editing it? Little to lose.

Yes... I tried taking new photos.  The one posted above was taken when posting this question.  I updated Monday and this has been a problem ever since.  I REALLY wish these issues were resolved BEFORE Apple puts out new updates.  It's very trying and inconvenient.

I am a user just like you and I agree.... As more and more features are added to iOS I am seeing more issues. I have some myself, still unresolved.

Thanks for the link...I placed a report.  Unfortunately, I do not see a "fix." Wondering if anyone else has had this issue.

In my case, 4 iOS devices running 9.3.1, I don't have the issue. IMO you got a corrupted system during the DL. Did you update over the air or through iTunes? Big difference in what they download. iTunes downloads the complete iOS, every file, and then replaces what you have on the phone. OTA updates only download the delta and then tries to replace those files only. This works most of the time but I have seen many more corrupted OTA DLs than through iTunes. Others may disagree. If I were you I would do a restore and yes, it would be a pain in the ***.

Had this happen on an iPhone 6 and although there was 900MB free, once I had 1.2GB it worked fine. I'm assuming it needs a lot of space to edit photos? My test was just cropping a few photos.  Don't know if that's your issue or it actually needs that much space but it worked for me.
