Q: iCloud Photos by album?

Hi,  I have a few thousand photos in my PHOTOS app, and I have setup multiple albums where I have arranged all of my favourites that have been edited.  I am looking into setting up the 1TB iCloud to backup all of my photos, however I would like to know if I do this, will iCloud copy the album structure that I have on my Mac (and upload the edited version by album) , or will it simply upload all photos in their original un-editied version into one large file?

I would like to ensure that I have back up copies of the edited version, and that I can find them easily (i.e. by album)

Would be very grateful for any information...

Many thanks.

iMac (27-inch Mid 2011), OS X El Capitan (10.11.3), .

If you enable iCloud Photo Library, it will mirror the album structure on your Mac and show the edited versions of your photos. You can see the library at www.icloud.com in the Photos app.

You will be able to restore your Photos Library from iCloud nearly the same as it is on your Mac, only the faces albums and the projects will be missing, as described here: Use Photos and iCloud Photo Library on multiple Mac computers - Apple Support

    Hi -

Sorry, one more question.  If I upload a photo from my Mac to iCloud, and then I delete the photo from my Mac - does the copy in iCloud also get deleted, therefore always syncing all my devices with iCloud..... or does iCloud always retain every file, even if they are deleted from the Mac (and therefore not synced)?

    Many thanks

iCloud is a syncing service.   If you delete a photo from a device that is syncing with iCloud Photo Library, the photo will be deleted from iCloud as well and the deletion will sync to all device.  The main purpose of iCloud is tomb a central storage and to sync all libraries on all devices to make them identical.

If you need to save storage on a device, enable "Optimize Storage" but do not delete photos that you want to keep. "Optimize storage" will replace the full resolution originals on your device by smaller, optimized versions and download the full resolution versions from iCloud, if they are needed.
